Re: News and Events> Clarington Firefighter Fired
I can't believe they fired him over this. Especially when he's the chair for the local's Politcal Action Committee and an elected steward. All he was doing was voicing his opinion and using his right to free speech.
Here's a link to the IAFF press release on this issue.

Absolute Garbage!!! I can't believe the city had the balls to do that. I think all they have done now is draw more attention to the problem's Brother Azevedo was pointing out in the first place. With the IAFF firmly behind Brother Azevedo I think he will definately have this wrongful firing reversed and hopefully his concern's addressed......Keep us updated Colin.....In solidarity......

Good news , I was told by our prez today tht he recieved an email that indicates that Clarington backed down and re-instated the fired firefighter with backpay.

All right! I'm glad to hear that :)
While I absolutely respect the need for firefighters to keep a good public image with regards to how they speak in public, I think we've all taken an oath, whether out loud and 'officially' or simply by the very fact that we are firefighters that public safety comes first.
If we cannot speak out in a constructive manner, to improve the lives of those we've sworn to protect, then it casts a shadow on us and our jobs.
While I wouldn't want to be the man who went through all of this, I think he's probably done all of us a service by doing the right thing.
(Granted, I realize there is always due process and chain-of-command/communications for this type of thing, but from what I read, the reaction to this FF's comments was *way* over the top)

From what I heard, By the time it was all over with, those small town politicians were nearly crying. The IAFF and the OPFFA sent in their big guns.
