MALAHIDE, ON - Friends, former colleagues and the family of Al Smith are carrying out a tribute to the late Malahide fire chief, a fire muster Smith had once dreamed of organizing. "Smitty and I talked about it" last year, said Malahide District Chief Dave (Otis) Symon. When Smith died in a car crash in St. Thomas on New Year's Day this year, Symon knew it was time to carry the plan through as a fundraiser for a scholarship in Smith's memory. "It's just our way of saying, 'Thanks for all the hard work, Smitty. You laid a lot of groundwork for some really good things.' " The competition will include traditional events such as laying hose, waterball and a quick-dress race. It takes place Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. at the Springfield ball diamond. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. The money will bolster a scholarship fund to help graduating Elgin County high school students planning careers as firefighters, police officers or paramedics.
