I'm on Vancouver Island. Qualicum Beach to be specific and used to be on the Dept., but now I just fight fires with the BC Forest Service in the summer.

nice to meet you all, I'm planning on trying for the forest fire fighting this year. It'll be a good experience that's for sure.

I don't think I've seen much of qualicum beach, that's past nanose right?

Coombs/Hillers FD? Hmm..I think I saw them on the way to port alberni once.

Qualicum Beach is just after Parksville, which is just after Nanoose. And if you're planning on applying for fire fighting with the BC Forest Service applications are due January 31st, but you must also be 19 years old. If you're younger than that, then there's Wall Forestry in Duncan that Contracts out fire crews.

Was with Malahat FD for 7-8 years, just moved to Sooke after living for a year in Victoria (up the road from VFD station 3, I swear they liked hitting the siren in front of my old place to rub it in!)

There is lots of "islanders" kicking around the forums, and even a few from the Island's Islands (AKA, the gulf islands)

FFBadam

I know the applications are due soon, and I heard about the Wall's forestry group in duncan. I wasn't aware though that being 19 was a requirement considering the age to take the s-100 through the school was 16. Good thing I'm 19 now haha.

I am in Nanaimo, but not with Nanaimo Fire Rescue. There are a couple from Parksville on this site.

Im the Chief of Dashwood, we have 4 juniors, I started out as a junior @ 16 best thing I ever did when I was a kid, now Im working for my FD and its the best thing I have ever done...as an adult.

We have a fantastic crew and we have alot of great things happening here and we all are looking foward to the future.

Our juniors are awesome, they are a true asset to the whole crew and department.

You'll have a blast....just remeber you are representing the greatest service in your distirict and your image and actions reflect back on the department, so walk tall, walk proud......be professional .....your a fire fighter!

For the JR FF going to Coombs you'll have a blast there, get use to the MVA's on Hwy 4! Give Aaron (the Deputy) a kick for me! We grew up together and he kicked my butt to join my FD.

and of course have fun!

Nick

Hey Nick, long time no see..... actually, the only time I've been up that way was when you got your new engine and had the open house.....

Glad to hear you're still kicking at the can and that the district decided to pay ya for sitting behind that big fancy desk I am sure you have on order from Ikea ;)

Its not like that, thats for sure, I'm working out of a small office(old desk), untill we do our 4000 sq ft addition, 2 stories, new app. bay, and lots of room! (2008)
Then may be a new desk, lots of other stuff to get for the crew before I start that kinda spending! Whats a chief with out a well looked after crew, station, apparatus and equipment.

Exactly! I know a chief or two who spend more time polishing their brass bars than they do looking after their crew!

Seems to be a good number of us from the island, maybe not as many as Hansport, but enough to throw a pretty good BBQ this summer..... any volunteers, Firechef?

It looks like a great unit...... I'll let you know when it arrives: Feb 17 was the last I heard!! Then, of course, there is the time required to train everyone on it, etc. I think they where shooting for early April for having it in service.

I have not had to much time to learn about it as I have been working litterally double time to get caught up to the recruit class who have a 3-4 month head start on me; plus I trying to get up to speed operationally as I have a feeling they want me be able to contribute on scene as soon as possible.

Tuesday night I study (because I get to do all those IFSTA FF1 & 2 tests over again.... I still think Firefighter A is an idiot!)
Wednesday is recruit training night
Thursday is regular fire practice night
and finally Saturday afternoon for a few hours I try to spend either learning the invetory of the trucks, studying maps, or whatever else has been placed on the back burner!!

Either Feb or March I will get to add the FR program to my workload, again, as my ticket expired (Not sure why I can't just use my OFAIII, must have something to do with red tape or paperwork) but that is not mine to question: If they want me to take the FR program, I will take the FR program!

Did I mention that I am enjoying every moment of it and how good it feels to be back!?!?!?! <you truely don't realize how much you miss it until you've been out of the loop and start back up again>

I dont see why not!!.....I am down for a Van Isle summer BBQ. We should get things rolling soon, so those of us that need to book the day off can. Any other islanders intrested in doing it?? Depending on where we do it, we could maybe get the local hall to give us a tour.

Another good excuse to have some Wiser's..........mmmm..Wiser's

Cowichan Bay is a good department. I've met radar a number of times and he probably knows who I am as well (maybe not directly, but I am sure most of the firefighters in the valley would recognize me).

As per the Island BBQ, perhaps it would be easier to all meet at Evolutions? Anyone know who is hosting it this year?

Anyone who can put up with Mill Bay is good in my books ;) Naw, just joking, the MB guys are a good crew too!

Went to the VIFFA website (www.viffa.org) and it looks like Duncan is hosting the 2007 Evolutions... hopefully they don't it right in the middle of town like south end did... middle of now-where seems to be the best place for the festivities to happen!

Sooke is treating me great. While I miss the 4 minute comminute to work with the old place, I am 1000 times more comfortable in sooke than downtown victoria! Plus, I think I was pushing the odds for getting my car broken into... had someone do my tires once, but never actually broken into.

I am pretty much the low probie on the line, but I don't mind. Its sorta re-freshing to not have to worry about anything except doing what I am told (and getting my homework done... which reminds me, I have to list a few buildings with Type II construction in sooke, besides the schools... any suggestions?). Besides, I always enjoyed rolling hose or washing the trucks!

Yea hope to get out this year, rumor has it that the theme is highland games, will have to get the Chief out in his Kilt for that one.

Sooke always has a good showing at Evo, they brought quite the contingent to ours in 2004.

firefighter26
01-25-2007, 07:05 AM
Yeah, I have met most of the guys with Sooke at either Evolutions or Auto Ex over the years, prior to me moving to Sooke, so I already partially fit in! (apparently I have a "reputation" and am "well-known"... not sure if that is good or bad!!)

Oh well, they were happy to welcome me aboard and I am happy to be there, so I guess it all works out in the end.

Tomorrows we celebrate Robby Burns Night at the hall (Annual Tradition) Dave will have the Kilt on, thats what happens when you have a Scottsman as a Chief, yea I havent talked to any of the boys at Duncan Fire Yet, I dont know where they will host it, I hope its not at the fair grounds, up in Glenora would be nice.

I had my interview with them on the 16th and I do agree, they seem like a great group of guys.

Duncan for evolutions 07 eh? I think I heard about that somewhere a while ago, either way I'm sure it'll be a great time.

I'll second that!!

Quiet night last night.... well, until 10:00pm when the FR duty crew takes over. Not sure what happens after that. We did, however, get a few FR calls during practice but nothing that would have pulled the entire department away from the ladder ops lecture... a topic I am sure we will get our quota of over the next few months as the new truck is supposed to be here in mid February!

When I left last night we were at 46 calls for the year! I am coming up on a dozen myself... not bad for only 2 weeks with a pager!
