PORT ELGIN, ON - Fire Chief Bruce Fenton entertained guests at the Saugeen Shores Fire Department Wednesday afternoon. Twenty-two children from the Family Y Child Care Centre were treated to a tour of the fire hall and fire safety information by Fenton. The youngsters got to go inside of the fire and rescue truck and had the chance to peek inside the pumper truck parked at the fire station. Fenton showed the children the gear firefighters have to wear, which included safety rubber boots, helmets, masks and air tanks. A nine-minute video called Sparky’s ABCs of fire safety was shown to the group. The Children were quizzed on what they learned after watching the video. The fire chief also stressed fire prevention techniques such as checking home fire sensors every 30 days. “If I can get half (of them) to go home and tell their parents to check the fire alarms, that would be good,” said Fenton in an interview following his presentation.
