Alright, something a little different. Usually I write a scenario and everyone (ok, sometimes only a few people) comment on it. I thought I would try something a little different this time.
I got this picture e-mailed to me a few weeks ago. The sender didn't know the FD or location (which is good becuase I want this to be a learning experience, not a way to point fingers), but it is pretty obvious it is a vehicle fire.
Now, since we all know how easy it can be to get tunnel vision from time to time, lets take a moment to look at this photo.
THE RULES
~ Point out ONE mistake and ONE mistake ONLY.
~ Tell everyone what you would have done differently to avoid the above mentioned ONE mistake, or what you would do to correct it.

The engine is not in the greatest spot!!!
Always try to park upwind from the incident your are attending.

Never "top up" your rocker covers with windshield washer fluid.
Read the owners manual.
:p
Ok seriously, don't stand in the fast lane while taking a picture........

I guess since it is only a vehicle fire, no SCBA is needed  As for doing something different, I would let that cop go and check the vehicle for placards. ;)

Ok,
so far we've got the engine location, missing SCBA, firefighters standing around in the fast lane taking pictures (or talking to the cop).
But there is something missing... or mainly, someone. Any guesses?

Never leave your pump pannel unattended....

Looks to me like the one feller is not wearing a helmet. Also, standing in the front (or rear) of a burning vehicle is not the greatest idea...unless you like to be called stumpy.

Shirley you don't mean the patient/driver?
I usually make them stay in the burning car to teach them a bit of a lesson.

The media?
The kid on the bike that always asks, " is there a fire?"
Not quite sure where your going with this '26. Perhaps you can give us your answer? :hmmmm:
However, I do like the concept of this thread. Perhaps in the next issue of the new magazine there could be a section like this. No contest, just a learning tool with the answers on another page.

I was refering more at the empty pump pannel.... unless that is the pump operator with now helmet or BA walking through the smoke towards the attack team.... meaning the lone firefighter standing over by the cop to be the IC?
I think this pretty much does it for this photo.
If anyone has any other photos they would like to post, feel free. Probably be best to keep the FD nameless and stick to the established rules, etc, etc. I have some more but they are on CDs that I never seem to be able to find when I need them!!!

Well I thought about that, but what if the pump panel is on the other side of the truck?? Hard to tell in the picture

If I had parked the rig right in the smoke like that I'd be moving too as soon as I could. Be pretty hard to breathe otherwise.

Think that one through. How many trucks have you seen with an officers side Pump panel?
Maybe A midmount or a rearmount.
My 2cents the pump placement could have bee thought about a bit.

Ya you do have a point. The only city that I can think of that has on officer side pump panel is Toronto.

I dont know but one thing i notice is that the fire truck is blocking 2 lanes, the police car is blocking a lane as well....but it looks to me that a firefighter (maybe the on scene commander) and the police officer are standing in the only lane that is not blocked....and looks like there is a car trying to get through...
Those 2 people should've protect themself and stay in those lanes blocked by the vehicles...safety
Just my thought !
But you got to admit tho, no matter how big an incident is, there is always 1 morron that : "HAVE TO GET THROUGH !!!!!!" lolol

Hahaha, that happened the other night. Guys were setting up the high vol. and people just had to drive by (over the high vol.) and see what's going on!!!

True, the engine is parked downwind from the smoke, but take a closer look and notice which way traffic flows on that side of the highway. The first concern on a three lane highway would be safety for your members. The engine was probably pulled across the two lanes to protect the attack crews from being creamed by a rubber necker doing 120km/h while trying to see what's going on. Also, who's to say the smoke was blowing that way when they first arrived. The wind may have changed direction or picked up while they were doing the attack. Just think, the duration of this call was probably in the 30 - 40min mark, the picture only captured a split moment in time of that call. Sure there are a couple of obvious mistakes made, but before criticizing everything that may appear wrong we should think about the happenings of that incident up until the point of the picture, (how heavy could traffic have been on that highway, was it windy or calm when they arrived, and so on and so on). Don't be too quick to judge from a single photo.

Engine not parked in preferred spot ie (upwind) missing s.c.b.a on one firefighter the first two in have them on wheres the I.C. and the point of command i know its a small scene but still need command presence. Dont know if i'd stand in front of vehicle case of exploding bumpershocks not sure what year of car though so only speculating that scenario. Think they need a R.I.T team lmao.

During an emergency Firfighters dont rise to the occasion they merely default to their level of training.

Ok, Ok, that was pretty good, a nice touch.... or touche! :fight: Definately worth three points!
The reason I wasn't in the first picture was because I arrived late because my truck wouldn't start.... I guess that's what I get for buying a DODGE! ;)
No, really. That's some nice photoshopping, even if it is at my expense (I can take a joke, but just remember that what's good for the goose......:secruity:)
