VICTORIA - The B.C. Liberals were warned two years ago about the mounting risk to communities from out-of-control forest fires. "B.C. has the highest risk of injury and property losses from fires in Canada," Auditor General Wayne Strelioff wrote in a report released June 2001, coincident with the Liberals taking office. The auditor observed that B.C. had been relatively lucky in containing the damage done by fires spreading through the so-called "wildland-urban interface" where built-up areas encroach on forests.
