Although information remains sketchy, unofficial sources are reporting that an Alberta oilfield medic was killed Sunday night in an accident. The medic, who worked for HSE Integrated, has been tentatively identified as Mike "Kodiak" Jolin, 30, of Ponoka. Jolin was apparently crushed between a pup trailer and a wireline truck during an oilfield operation. He leaves two small children behind...

A 30-year-old Ponoka man died in a rig accident near Fox Creek Sunday.

The man was directing a tanker unit backing up when he was pinned between the semi-truck and a small trailer unit on the drill site.

The man’s name has not yet been released, but work has stopped and Alberta Workplace Health and Safety and RCMP officers are on site investigating.

RCMP spokesman Wayne Oakes couldn’t say how much experience the worker had or how much supervision there was on the site.

“Those will all be issues that the investigation and health and safety will likely take a look at.”

Fox Creek is located 250 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. The worksite was located in a rural area near Simonette River.

Very sadly I regret to inform you all:

Mike Jolin a proud Canadian Primary Care Paramedic, a 30 y/o residing in Ponoka Alberta, and my good friend of mine and a very GOOD MAN was killed last night. Mike was crushed between a 2 trucks during an oilpatch FRAC operation, the details are still under investigation at this time.

He leaves 2 small children and a very Special Lady behind.

Mike was my good friend, we worked many Oilpatch and Forestfire jobs as partner's, he was very capable and extremely dilegent, a VERY competent Primary Care Paramedic. His care for his patients was exemplary as was his spirit, but then you ALL know that from his posts here. His sense of humour was infectious, his work in Industry was recognised as without equal.

The last time we were together "we of course" celebrated the "soon to be birth of his newest child" ... in the usual way. Mike had Celiacs, so we could not drink beer, so we developed a huge hangover's bilaterally with his favourate drink the WHITE RUSSIAN. I am working on another hangover, upon hearing this tragic news..... so fcuk the spelling.

I take strength in the fact that another Industrial Provider was summoned from a competitive contractor in Industry and Mike was NOT alone when he passed, as one of our members in the BROTHERHOOD of EMS was there to do everything in there power to assist HIM in HIS time of need.

So raise your glasses HIGH my friends, to Mike Jolin aka Kodiac.

Cheers Mike you will so be missed.

All this is an update and the information is subject to change, I so hope that I am not misleading in any way.

The plan is to have a service on Saturday March 17th in a rather small church called Saint Augustine Catholic Church, perhaps 300 persons seating ? It is located on 5113-52 street in Ponoka and then a lunch provided at the Ponoka Canadian Legion 3911 on Highway 2A it appears Jens plans are for Saturday the March 17th but this is dependant on the Church. I should be apprised with a final confirmation as of tomorrow, will keep you posted. I have just returned from Ponoka and have briefly discussed her wishes and in her own words; "anyone that would like to attend are more than welcome" the initial plan and expectations are frankly a very small town perspective, I believe the magnitude of a LODD is a bit beyond her understanding at this point.

Jen has requested that I be the liaison (for family) and also deliver some parting words along with EMT Kevin R. another close friend. Jens biggest concern is the costs, she is primarily focused with the future of her children. Her wish is that a "no camera" event and no media. I have discussed this with her and she is realistic that this may occur but please pass this request along to ALL. Her Wish is for the Edmonton Guard of Honour be in attendance and a "Piper" is also her request as Mike was a Piper himself and it appears very fitting.

The impact of Mikes death is cushioned for Jen as she is surrounded by family and friends in this small comunity, but with all friends calling now this it is just beginning to hit her. I informed her that so many of Mikes Brothers and Sisters in EMS that wish to show their respects and rumours have reached my ears that many services across Canada have shown interest in attending the service and support, please contact the Alberta College of Paramedics for direction of larger groups. Jen is open to a Memorial Service in a larger venue at a later date but no details have not been discussed as of this time, my personal view is just that, but, I will honour her feelings and choices.

I have been informed that a Trust fund will be set in place soon to be established by "Mike's Mother In Law" a super great lady. I will forward that information asap. I have had no contact with Mike's birth Mother, I believe that Mike was raised by his Grandparents I am still researching a contact for them at this time as well.

If you ALL would be so kind as to contact pm with your condolences and any comments you would wish to have me pass along, I will copy and print for Mike's sons: Austin who is 7 y/o and Rylieh 5 months old, so that when they learn to read they will know of the support for our fallen Comrade.

cheers

A link to the ACP website that contains photos of the memorial as well as a very very strong video.

Though I did not know Michael, that video brought more than one tear to my eyes.

Rest in peace brother.
