Good idea DH...
Hey check out the results so far, 100% of firefighters polled do not work a second job!!!:D
Seriously though, contrary to the assenine comments of a certain unnamed member of this site which have since been removed...this is my personal position on this issue...and note I said, position, not opinion, this is just me describing the set up that I have. Others may certainly be in a different boat then me.:)
My career in the fire service is the first and only career job that I have ever had. When I was hired it was fulfilling a life long dream, and I remain to this day extremely proud that I am able to serve my community as a firefighter. I spend my days at work training, studying, and just generally trying to be the best firefighter that I can be. As I have gained more experience I have also branched out into some other areas within the fire service as far as becoming an on-shift field trainer.
I do not work a second job, and I do not go into work expecting to get a good nights rest so that I can go work in my "other" job. The fire sevice is my one and only career. I use my days off to the best of my ability to make sure that I am refreshed and ready to handle the emercency situations that I will attend while on shift, and so that I can deliver the best service that I am capable of.

Na, but I do remember that there was stiff competition for that small part.
In the end it was too hard to make ends meet and I ended up trying a hole new career.
Some think I really blew it when I left. I think I would have ended up blowing it if I stayed.

I have a small business that I run on my days off. It is a service business, not a retail outlet and is extremely flexible. My business allows me the opportunity to make a little extra money and write off a few things while keeping my career the number one priority. I never miss a call-in or lose the ability to respond because of it.

Just FYI, that thread was deleted due to a Career Firefighter who used the report a post feature to state "I consider this a bait post..." which I agreed with, the statement was uncalled for and not very valid, yet it appears you all would like to have this discussed.

So technically I do have a second job, it's making sure the house is spick and span for Mrs.ABFF37. Also, getting the groceries, cooking, laundry, ironing creast clothes...it's a busy life

I've got all of that to look after too. Mrs Raker works full-time Monday-Friday so in addition to being an almost full-time housewife/parent, I have my career employment at the firehall plus my small business. I also have to build a deck, paint my house and build a fence and a playhouse for the kids this year.

It may be interesting to note that I have been OFFERED many different jobs recently...
I was offered a position with a contractor working construction, with a landscape company doing maintenance work, and as a security officer at the city's second largest hospital. The security one offered me $23 an hour to start. But I have enough other things going on right now, so I have politely declined them all.
Intereting to note that I have not sought any of them out, and none of the job offers were from fellow firefighters asking me to work in thier side business. Al three were from friends mentioning to friends about my training, and availability, and the next thing I know I'm getting job offers.
I decided that I'd better not risk fighting with psychiatric patients at the hospital, getting hurt, and missing my career just to make a few extra bucks.

sounds like your second job was a real pain in the ass.........
I used to work a second job on my days off. But as time goes by you find that you enjoy the down time more than the extra coin. I guess age has a way of making you see the need for a little rehab. This being said I know that a lot of folks with young familys could use the extra money. Just don't let it get in the way of what really matters....

Progression to top salary is by and large pretty rapid in the fire service, not always so with police
I believe most progression coincides with step up exams that ensure the new FF is attaining trade knowledge and skill levels. But it is true that some have to get outside jobs in order to meet their family needs. This asspect is unfortunate.

I work 4on - 4off... Ive got 2 young kids and a stay home wife. I spend the time with them. However if you have a second job thats no biggy but when guys want to bunk down early because they do more off shift then on shift. They make me sick..Why are you a firefighter then if the 2nd job is more important then your career. 2nd job all good for those that want to do it but not for me.

I have a few little seasonal side jobs that I've been doing for many years, even before I was hired , and continue to do so now. The kids are all in school and the better half works shift work as well , so they fill in the spare time when not busy with other activities.
1. I am supervisor/consultant in the strategic and/or tactical levels for an agency where I live that handles emergency calls on a "as needed basis."
2. Part time instructor at a community college for the pre service fire programme. Specializing in live fire taining and it's related job functions.(so ya, I've seen more fires than most).
3. Football referee.

Too bad whats her nutz hasnt come back to check this pole.
In a brief timeframe it has given us a reasonable snapshot of how FTCB spend their days off.Albeit in a very small control group.Maybe I will send mailers out to all Ft FDs across our great land.
After powling my mob 1 of six relies on getting rest to go to a second job.
So in conclusion Im saying lady troll has been led down the garden path.It is fun to tell ppl who think they know what we do what they want to hear.

Well, I see it this way...
When I am at the station, I give the city 100% of myself in whatever I am doing. Fighting fires, sitting around waiting for calls, washing aparatus, sleeping, doing door to door prevention...
But when I am on my own private time, I'll do whatever I please... I do work sideline occasionally (teach part time at the fire school, and work occasionally in kitchen installations to help my fathers business).
One thing is for sure, I don't cound on a "good nights sleep" at my station for sideline work the next day, as a matter of fact I generally won't book any sideline between work shifts. I do all sideline when I am on my days off.
Just my 2 cents :)

One of the issues for me in having my own small business is that I want to provide the best future possible for my family. My business does allow me some luxuries that only working full-time does not. I can save my household money and create tax breaks for myself by writing some things like gasoline off. I can give more to my kids now and I only work an additional day or two a week. Also, I probably will never see captaincy in my department as there are alot of young guys with more seniority than myself. I need to build up my personal worth so that when I retire I have more than just my pension to keep me going.

There is nothing wrong with working on your days off.If you are doing sumpin that requires manual labour and alertnes for safety etc IMHO it should be strictly a days off gig,if someone works as a sales rep or accountant or whatever..... knock your sox off!
The issue was to determine if as the person who posted and others who believe the age old myth that we count on 8 hours a night to go to our second jobs.
Torontos greatest mayor ever:rolleyes: also made a comment like that about his old NY boys and girls. He back tracked pretty quick when challenged.

My career will always be more of a priority than my small business will ever be and if it ever becomes conflicting then I'm done with it.
