SOOKE, BC - If you can extricate yourself from the couch this weekend, make a trip to the Sooke Fire Station #1. The Sooke Fire Department is hosting the Island's 2004 Auto Extrication Competition Saturday and Sunday. Fourteen, six-member B.C. teams will descend on the firehall to see how fast they can get living "victims" out of precariously placed, crashed autos. "The public will see some pretty professional extrications," said Sooke fire chief Bob Kelsey. Spectators are welcome to the free event, which starts at 7:30 a.m. both days. "Cheer for your favourite team," deputy chief Steve Sorensen said. Or you can have a burger or view equipment displays if watching live people being hauled out of ripped apart wrecks isn't your cup of tea. There are two events. The limited pit is where each team has 20 minutes to remove a victim from a simulated crash using only hand and air-powered tools. In the unlimited pit, teams have 20 minutes to extricate the victim using any tool at their disposal. This includes the famed "Jaws of Life."
