I was just wondering what other departments do in respect to members losing/having things stolen like gloves and balaclavas?

I am tired of having firefighters come up to me for a new pair of gloves when I just issued them a new pair the month before hand or I also get them coming up to me and saying someone stole them and they need a new pair.

I was thinking of taking the gloves and stuff I find on the floor and keeping them and selling it back to the firefighters for a cost in whick the money will go into a "slush fund" or something. On the flip side I know the Chief will not go for this because he'll say that the firefighters need the proper equipment to do their job (which I do agree with). So I am wondering what is the answer to this problem I have.

Mike, My guess is the members that lose their gloves, work construction on the side, and those losing their balaclavas, are avid hunters.

scare them a bit, make them sign pappers saying that any lost/stolen equip. most be replaced at the cost of the firefighter. our department dose not allow anything to leave the hall. any equip. we want in our on car we must buy.

O dear o dear.

What a slippery slope.

In my dept firefighters have been asked to produce the missing equipment seconds after handing the "missing/lost" form to the fellow working in stores. This of course is ridiculous as the form has already been OKed by the DC.

On other shifts DCs are unwilling to sign these forms until the missing equipment can be accounted for.

All I can say is....................WTF?

If you have a bunch of thieves in your dept you had better take the proper steps to prove and document it.

Otherwise you should move quickly to insure that your men are protected.

Just wright there number of batch or initial on the glove.

I'd have to agree with the Frenchman... wow that felt weird.

We ID all PPE with the members department number. That helps in two ways; one you can track down the gear, and two you can identify repeat offenders.

Now if I could only stop the guys from ripping thier gloves, so they can get a new pair!

Or how about a simple dose of the lost art of TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR STUFF!!.

First issue free, damage replacement free provided you either return or show the damaged item.Maybe give one chance at loss replacement.Afterthat, tell them to reach into their pocket its gonna cost.

If you keep honouring the I lostit clause your folks will never learn. If its because guys are stealing other guys stuff you have a serious issue.

I thought this thread looked familiar. LOL

As I said on the other side, If it's a first time thing and they have a legit reason as to why they were lost, I'd give them a new set.

If it's a common occurance amongst some I'd make them start buying their own stuff. Maybe then they'll take better care of it.

Have you thought of a string through the sleves?

We have all our gear labled, there should be no issues after that. If any gear is found in the bays or trucks its easy to figure out who is belongs to. and its a on going problem, you get to give them a shot of "Wild Turkey" at the Christmas Dinner.

Here we HAVE to write our id number and name on ALL our gear. It's an SOP.

And with Montreal being such a bureaucracy, requesting new gloves or hoods (or anything for that matter) is so long and complicated that we are REAL carefull to not lose anything!

I guess the advice is "drown then in bureaucracy" and they won't lose their gloves... :) (I can't believe I'm reccomending that!!!)

Sounds like your guys need to grow up and be accountable for their own gear.

Simply marking their name or number on the items should suffice, If not try stringing a dumby line (A heavy piece of wool) beyween the gloves and put it through the sleeves of their coat like a little kid
