I was just wondering what you guys think about quints and aerials. I am not a firefighter so my opinion isn't really that valid. Here in Edmonton we have both. We used to have just aerials but the last units they bought in 1996 were quints. I was 9 at the time and thought the quints were cool because they were big and new. However now I 17 and I have talked to some guys here and I haven't heard one good thing about the quints. The guys all say they are too big or too heavy or something. Personally I think they are better then the aerials we have because they have water and a pump the aerials do not so at a fire the aerials need a pump. What do you guys think?

it all depends on what will serve the area where you need the truck, a quint wouldnt service a district with high rises or with an aerial that is way too far out of district to be a 2nd or even 3rd truck in. Obvisouly quints are nice cause of the water they carry, but im big on aerials, I drive an aerial (110 ft) and i love it. Modern day aerials are great trucks. Most do carry some water, carry a lot of ventalation tools and ladders. They are awesome pieces of machinery and have proven themseflves time and time again on the fireground.

I agree RD, i drive a 110 ft ladder truck as well and love it. We purchased i believe it was 14 quint's in the mid 90's and have had a lot of problem's with them. Our dept. just put out to tender for 10 engine's and 3 110ft ladder's so it looks like we are slowly going back to Engine's and Ladder's again which is fine by me....

Edmonton used to have just aerials that were 110ft. In 1996 they bought 2 quints that also have 110ft ladders on them, they just have water and lots of the guys complained that they were too big. I posted this question because Edmonton was buying new aerials and some guys said they would be quints some said they would be aerials. They all had different opinions about what should be bought. I personally think a quint makes more sense because it doesnt have to be pumped into.
Well the 2 new trucks just arrived and they are quints and they are 7 feet longer then the old quints so some guys will be mad about driving them. Especially since one of them is going downtown.

Hey Red Devil, I'm sorry but I just have to do this. It's almost like you set yourself up. I have read many time as you laid into some members about their spelling. Well, you might want to re-read your post ;) Obvisouly:confused: Ventalation:confused: Themseflves   LOL
I just had to do it RD. I really respect your opinion on this board (although the delivery could sometimes be better) and I know that if you are willing to give it, you must be willing to receive it:)
Now I got to watch myself, because the Devil is after me.

Hey "Best",
Looking forward to some new rigs in your dept. I prefer to see Engines and Ladders out there cruising the streets of Vancouver. It may have made more sense to have Quints initially... But it looks better to see a couple of Engines a Ladder and a Battalion chief responding. From a visitors view I like to see some diversity on the streets..Instead of a bunch of trucks that look the same.
How does that Whelen "Executer" siren work on your 110 foot tower? Does it move traffic well?? You don't see many of those whelen "sounds like" a mechanical siren out there.

911Caddy, i'm a big fan of Engine's and Ladder's as well. The new one's should start arriving this year sometime. As far as the Whelen on Tower 7 moving traffic...... you definately know it is enroute with that siren but downtown is so grid lock nowadays the only thing that seem's to move 'em is a little blast on the air horn to get their attention.....BC.....
