Prospective city fire recruits will have to pass a polygraph test to demonstrate their core "honour, character and high moral standards" under a new recruitment process. The Calgary Fire Department has revamped its hiring practice as the department embarks on a massive drive to hire 500 to 600 new firefighters in the next six to eight years. Applicants will be asked to be accountable for their choices and decisions. "I'm not looking for criminals, but I will ask some pointed questions," said Danny Freeman, recruitment co-ordinator for the fire department.
