Five local firefighters and the director of Nanaimo's emergency program are now on the firelines in the B.C. interior, in what is turning into one of the worst fire seasons on record in the province. Deputy Chief Doug Angrove, with the Nanaimo Fire Department, said the city got a request for resources at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Twelve hours later they had the crew, with a pumper and a department pickup truck, on a ferry leaving the Island.
