View Full Version : Best turnout gear?

Has anyone shopped for new turnouts lately? We are in the steps of ordering 12-15 new sets. What did you choose and why?
We're currently using Jainsville gear. I was amazed at the improvments in flexibility and weight of the latest gear. I tried a set of Globe X-treme and it was like sweat pants: no restiction to mobility at all. I could go jogging in these things...
We're currently looking at Globe, Morning Pride, Jainsville and a few others.

The best turnout gear is the set that fits properly, provides
adequate protection, and meets all of the current standards. ;)
I currently have a set of Janesville gear, that was custom made
for me. The gear is over 10 years old, and will be retired soon.
Over its life time it has been comfortable to wear, and provided
the required protection, whether it be at a fire, MVA, or other
incident.
We currently have Globe and Starfield Lion gear in our inventory.
Both have performed well, and I am not aware of any major issues.
Our Chief has just ordered several custom sets of Starfield Lion, (including
my new gear) so you may want to touch base with him for some input
into your purchase.
Stay safe !!

I am going on three weeks with my new turnouts from Starfield Lion, very nice gear. Once you have a set of turnouts that have been tailored for you it is really hard to go wrong. I also like that Starfield Lion is made in Canada.

Our department uses the globe extreme gear. It's tailored perfectly, very light, and has some cool features like the rescue harness/straps at the back. Compared to what I used in school and courses, the globe extreme gear is like a lexus compared to a pony. Hope that helps.

I have used Starfield, Globe, Morning Pride and now Starfield/Lion. The big thing is to have the custom fit as others have said. I found less restriction in Globe and MP but once the gear is broken in they are all comfortable.

I've had securitex for the last couple of year...I hate it!! The reflective on the pant legs caught fire a month after I got it at a grass fire and burnt the material. Had to replace the pants. I am soaking wet on the inside every time my jacket is wet. And I was doing some time in the burn house about a month ago, and the heat was coming right through my gear, while the others in the same room were not bothered at all! I would not buy it again. Just my.02

If its older Securitex the moisture barrier went on a lot of sets. Well worth checking out. You could be seriously hurt without the proper protection as we all know.

I have heard bad things about Securitex. A while ago someone posted a picture on firehouse.com of one of their coats held to the light and it looked like a screen door. I believe Flint Michigan had problems with gear from that company.

Here is a thread about securitex at firehouse which has some posts with pics.

I was just issued a brand new set of GLOBE gear. I haven't had the chance to use it in action, but my first impression is that it is by far the most comfortable gear I have worn, not to mention asthetically pleasing. The rescue strap in the back is ingenious.

We just ordered 18 new set of globe. It took us a lot of arguments to decide wich to go with. We ended up with globe because of the fit. Starfield lion was our next choice. We haven't taken delivery yet so we still hope we made the right decision

You guys made the right decision, I used mine today for the first time and I was blown away by how well it worked. Very compfortable and it moved with my body through out the entire time I was wearing it. Makes the tower gear I used previously look like absolute garbage.

I tried the Jainsville V-Force gear recently and, thought it was very good, it did not move asa well as the Globe Extreme.

globe is garbage doesent stand any ground to heat and has that friggen belt that takes the extra min. to clip and just gets in the way if you want great gear that stands its ground to a lot of fire get morning pride...but i do have to agree it is heavy at times. globe is a waste of money..
good luck with your purcase.

yea....we thought it was tuff gear but when it came in we knew we would have to buy new sets for the guys next year because just the whole gear is just poorly made

We got new securitex a year ago, and have had no problems. The gear is extremely light and it's very easy to move in. No complaints.

Montreal got 'em too (2 year phase in, around 2400 units)
I got mine in the spring, and after spending a summer in it, lemme tell you I don't like it. It's way too warm and doesn't breathe well at all. Just riding to a call (you haven't done anything yet!) you start to sweat...
Fit wise, it is relatively light and comfortable, and has a lot of big well placed pockets.
Just my 2 cents...

I would have to agree with you on how hot the gear gets, but I only found the spike in temp. when in the sun because the gear is black. Mind you summer didn't really show up in the Lower Mainland of BC this year, maybe next summer will be the test.

our department uses the globe extreme gear, it's fantastic. I dont get where you're coming from about the belt. It's right there and clips in a matter of seconds. You say it takes an extra minute. Your shoot times must be really fast

Not sure how much you have used Globe, but you are definately the exception to the rule.
C'mon a minute to do up a belt.
I have used starfield, pre sale to Lion it did the job but wasnt very comfortable.Currently use morningpride absolute CRAP!
My set is just over three years old and has been sent away for repairs every couple of months. Not because of damage inccured in fires but things like snaps and velcro falling off, their fancy ass kneepads wear out quickly and tear. Its basically just poorly made IMHO.I would love to have globe.I am very familiar with their product. Not often anyone complains about any of their product.
Dont forget most bunker gear is made with material supplied by two or three different manufacturers. Its all in what your dept will spend their money on.
The most important part is how those materials are put together.

As a sales rep for a turn out manufacturer I usually try to avoid these threads. I do have to agree with DH, there are only so many companies that make the materials found in our TOGs. It comes down to how the materials are assembled, the cut of the material (to make it fit nice) and useful options, like cargo pockets, not pillows for your knees.
PS I don't sell MP and also hate the crappy fit and knee pads that are never under my knees.

It's also mandatory on all gear manufactured after Feb 2007
