Red Devil like I posted in a previous forum the only building you have become familiar with the local McDonald's. That's were you really work. As a fry guy I bet. Try and deny if you want, but everyone knows the bull @#%$ you spred around this site and it's a couple of feet deep. I know you get off on having this kind of disruption on The FIRE HALL web site. I have not seen a constructive comment or any positive input from you yet. If you have nothing to say related to Fire Rescue go surf the porn sites and enlighten them with crap that spills out of your mouth.

Sorry to the rest of the Fire Hall memeber's I know that Red Devil makes comments and posts like this to get guys worked up and have this kind of stuff on the site. I have gotten it out of system and it will not happen again.

Geez ShaneB ... with only 28 posts, you haven't been around long enough to know the history with RD and JG ... it's actually pretty funny when you get to read all of the posts. Rdevil does post some really insightful info on most threads. He has been known to take the piss out on some people, but that's the fun of it. And it's firehall tradition that you take some ribbing from time to time. You gotta lighten up and not get so worked up about other members.

PS ... I can imagine that RD will reply to this and point out your spelling mistakes ...

FOR &$*@ SAKE'S!!!! Why cant there be a single thread on this site, that doesnt go off topic. I dont even read half of them anymore, because some threads have 56 posts and 4 of them are on topic. I dont even read the one I started on folks favorite musical band because some people started taking about U2 tickets and non-sense. I know, it's all friendly chat, but thats what MSN Messenger or email is for. You all have firehall.com email addresses, so if you want to talk about U2 tickets please use that. I am sick of run on threads, and its got to stop. This site has gotten really boring, annoying, pathetic and total disrespect for the service. Keep the threads to what they are and be done with it. How can we learn anything from each other when the topics go to shit? This one, JG has a perfectly good question, one that I am very interested in and its gone to shit already. Please Boss, there must be something you can do to stop all this. There is a rivalary here between JG and RD and it sucks. Keep the damn comments to your self, or send the guy an email.

Collin911 I may have only 28 posts but that doesn't mean I have not been looking and reading I know exaxctly what RD is like I have been reading his "intelligent" posts for around 1.5 yrs. And if he likes, he point out every spelling and grammar mistake in all my posts. I don't mind a good ribbin. I'm a miner and nobody gives a dig in the ribs as good as a miner. Like I said I got it off my chest. No bad.

Michael13 ... that's gotta be your age. A very immature post if you ask me. If you were so interested in this topic, why didn't you reply to it back in OCTOBER when it was started. If you think that the site has become boring, annnoying and whatever else you said, then I suggest you leave and join another site. There are very intellectual conversations that go on on this site. Yes, I will agree that some topics do go off-course, but it's as simple as getting them back on track if you want to. You really have to lighten up and think about what this site is about ... it can't be all about the serious, no humour topics.

Michael13

Bite Me..........I am not leaving this site. Theres more people that agree with me, so you loose. RD's crap is annoying and doesnt relate to anything. He has never posted a useful thread, he just comments. Half of his stuff is lies. He says he's been a FF for 20 years in one thread, then in another he said he joined 5 years ago. He doesnt make sense. I dont get how you cannot agree with me?!??! They act like children, and no I'm not 13. Why can't there be a topic thats productive??! Thats all I ask.

We always kick off FPW with an annual Steak & Egg Breakfast for a bit of a fund raiser. It goes over quite well and we usually clear about $800 bucks, not bad for a mornings work. The rest of the week we have never done a whole lot in the past, but this year a few of us have taken our training to a new level, and on FPW, I think we might just take a day, and go shake up the school a bit;)

Dentedhead I don't want to go off topic, Ha ha. Yes we have more than a few miners that go at each other day in and day out. And there is always someone telling them to shut up, or give a rest untill coffe time. That's just what I was doing. Like I said before no bad. I know that RD will keep it up, I don't expect him to stop, I said my peace and will know quietly read his posts and snicker.

Which is why we post under favorite musical band. Buddy you take the bait and go off on rant's more than anyone on this site. I know this is off the original topic but JG I have been asked to do something with the kids (3-5y/o) at my boys pre-school. Just something like a little firedrill and talk do you have any tips or ideas/games to make it fun and interesting?? Anyone else with HELPFUL tips for me would greatly be appreciated.
(I guess you can e-mail or PM me if this is off topic)

Well, skidz, I tried to pos this y'day. But it didn't go through. It was the greatest reply I have ever written. But you'll have to trust me on that, cause I just know it won'y be as good as it was last time. It was sooo good, it may have crashed the server.

So here goes.
How can it be off topic. EVERY week is fire prevention week. It's just that one week in October, it gets emphasized more.

First off remember that Preschool to grade 2 you have about 15 - 20 minutes to get you message across. Don't play with fire. Take any matches or lighters to an adult immediately. etc. Btw, kids don't grasp the concept of Your house will burn down if you play with matches. They do however drasp the concept of Your favorite toy will be destroyed. Don't be an ogre about it, but it helps to work with the way little minds are wired.

Stop, drop&roll. If there is a fire, get out of the room and close the door. Make sure you tell a grown up, and get out of the house. The usual.

We always play BIG YELLOW MONSTER with them. Come in dressed in your streets. Carry your gear and a SCBA in with you. Let the kids see you and explain what the stuff is (simply, they don't need or want to know it has 2216 PSI breathing air etc.) Then, put it all on and tell them that if a firefighter comes looking for them, this is what they will look like. Put on the BA and breath as loud ands hard as you can. Speak slowly and loudly. Then take off the mask and tell them, that it isn't a big yellow monster, it a firefighter coming to save them, and they shouldn't be afraid. I'm sure you can get the idea.

I'm also sure others will have different thoughts for you. And they may disagree with mine. Thats cool. Lets just help them be safe. Hope this helps.

Sorry it took an extra day.

DFCSmash has a real good idea. That was what we did for fire prevention week as well, we added a little twist. The firefighter got into his turnout gear and BA and crawled on his hands and knees to show the kids the safe way to get out of a smoky house, and had them follow him around the class to the exit. However you do it anything that can get the kids attention and show them that it's not a "yellow monster" coming to get them is going to be benificial.

RD, I know I don't read them all, because I dont have time. I dont work shift work like ummmm 99% of you in here, so I dont have 12 hours to read and read and read. I go to school remember and I have maybe 10 minutes a day to visit this site and dont like to waste my time reading threads that are off topic and long. And when there 50+ of them, its hard to catch up and get a grip of what other people have posted.

Bestcoast-
Ya, you can post whatever you want, but it makes it hard to read when you talk about where U2 is, and where to get tickets and how to get tickets and on and on. My fav musical band topic turned into 3 or 4 of you inviting each other to shows and who knows what, I stopped reading them. If its more of a one on one conversation personally email that person. Trust me, it makes it easier. Also, try getting messenger if y awana chat. Single line answers are all that was needed for that thread. Everything else is just useless info for everyone else. It's real hard to just click on the last post and figure out whats going on, without having to scroll up and read for an hour. Doesnt matter any more, I wont be looking at any posts anymore that arn't fire related anyway. Keep your U2 fan club going, I wont bother you there.

Treat the forum like a FD monthly meeting if you have those. The Chief yells at ya for going off topic or disrupting the meeting, so why is there an excpetion here?

Now, I have to go do homework, since I have wasted my 10 mins replying to you folks.

Mikey13, What the heck does anything in your last post have to do with Fire Prevention Week? Or even Fire Prevention. Couldn't you have just PM'd those people? I mean, we're just trying to stay on topic here and POW. I wouldn't even be saying this if you weren't showing such clear signs of crainial-rectal inversion. Lighten up. Live a little. And just for your info buddy, 100% of those who work, work shift work. Just that some of us have the same shift all the time and some of us have shifts that shift :D . My regular shift is whatever 15hours I need out of 24 to get the job done. The length of my work week is determined by the same factor.

WE NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED TOPIC:
skidz, I forgot to say Don't forget to let them try on your helmet! That's a major highlight. And the "letters " you'll get from the kids will give you the warm fuzzies. Way cool. :)

Hey DFC Buddy...you know I always have your back....but never let a kid try on your helmet....I know it sound corny but, especially in young children the weight of the helmet could cause neck problems. We have kids plastic fire helmets at our hall (skidz hall too) I would far prefer this way and they are just as pleased because they can take these ones home.

Michael 13, if you don't agree with people going off topic, then don't read the post, move on. The thing is that this is a free forum, people are allowed, and will talk about whatever they want. Some will agree some will disagree. JG,Fire prevention Branch handles alot of the fireprevention week stuff. We will do fire drills for schools in our district, but that's about it. Last year, me and a couple of buddies went to a local elementary school and did a talk in the gym in front of the whole school. It was interactive and alot of fun.

I think its a great thing. Its something I remember from my childhood,a girl in my class' dad came in to tell us about being a firemen and I got to put the petch coat, boots and best of all the helmet. It fit cause I was 15y/o in grade 3.

Nothing like dog piling a guy! Michael13 agree with ya too. When i first discovered this site the topics were pretty interesting. Sometimes they still are! But the quality of the forum "I think" has gone down some. But what can you do! Putting your thoughts out there is just going to get the responses you were talking about in the first place. Its mostly OPINIONS in here anyways, and what are they worth to ya?

If only more people would put thought into their posts they would realize that each post reflects the success of this site.

What would a new person think of this site by the posts they read!

I might be wrong but that is my opinion.

But who am I to tell you this? Keep doing what you are doing!

But I do re-read my posts and try to make sure they are in the right category, no guarantees, and are not insulting! You guys need to lighten up a bit, have some fun, some of the others need to realize their joke is not a joke when it's insulting, and some others like myself need to start thinking before we reply. Mikeeps is right, hopefully a lesson has been learned.

Another really good thing for prevention week is to have local councillors and media in for a mini training day. Bunker them up put them into the smoke house or something similar with the blacked mask to find the "baby" spray some water, up the aerial both stick and platform. We then put them through a very modified yet still small c chalenging combat challenge. They love it and by all accounts go away with a greater appreciation of what we do.

Of course we do lots with the schools and general public as well. One of the more popular ones is the FF/chief for a day coloring contest. Its huge with the kids.

Then take off the mask and tell them, that it isn't a big yellow monster, it a firefighter coming to save them, and they shouldn't be afraid. I'm sure you can get the idea.

that's gotta be the best idea i've ever heard of... hehe :D having an open-house and showing them around the trucks and the hall a bit is usually pretty effective, too - let them sit in the driver's seat, maybe turn on the lights, maybe give the siren/air horn a quick blast, etc etc. jaws of life have gotten a good reaction when i've showed the to kids, too... others made good points about the helmets, though - people are liability-happy these days, best to just stick with the bunkers (it's really funny to see a little kid in a huge bunker coat!).

and yeah... guys... really... try to keep at least a little on topic here? :)

skidder
04-01-2005, 08:56 AM
for our open house we have all the trucks out and usually 2-3 guys on each... (to ensure that kids don't pull levers and mess with BA's or get hurt...) then inside we have a mini smoke house we setup that kids can crawl through and see what its like then we have sparky walkin around while there is usually hotdogs and chips for sale going towards the burn fund usually. Towards the end of the evening we tear apart a car with the jaws while our cappy is on the loudspeaker explaining what we are doing..... usually dump a rookie as the victim in the car.

Although this steak and egg thing i read prior is a neat idea also.... did you guys sell tickets prior or have them just show up.... how many people did you have come to this?

We just did the advertising (as much free ads a possible, utilize the free news sections of the local paper, posters, faxed the posters to the other dept's in our mutual aid district and had them post them up in their towns, etc.), and had people show up, I live in a Melita, MB. (pop-1100) and we probably have about 175 show up. In the end we cleared around $800 for about 5-6 hours work. I have organized it from the start, and keep pretty accurate notes as to when we order things, and what quantity, based on so many people, so if anyone wants the notes, just PM me, they would make a good guide line. We also do some door prizes, and a raffle draw (usually fire related stuff, like smoke alarms, fire ext. etc) Also, we get a few people that walk in and cut us a donation cheque...just because..everyone loves the fire dept. ;) :D .

We go out to the schools, daycares, and coloring contests and organize hall tours. We will also have an open house and one of our Territorial politicians has always supported us with photo op with our Chief.

A new guy came up with a great idea of having a Skate w/Sparky event. We get free ice time from the City and have Sparky skate with the kids at no cost to them. Last year over 100 kids came out!

Borrowing an idea seen elsewhere, we are thinking about going house to house at random and those that volunteer to have us inspect working alarms, extinguishers will get a cupon for a free Pizza Hut pizza.
