View Full Version : Colour Code Helmets

As a side bar to the gear poll I thought it would be interesting to see how or if any body else has a colour code system to your helmets. In my little world Chief and Deputy are white ( pretty standard) Trianing Officer Red, Captians Red, Dont have any leuy's, Fire fighters Yellow, Probationary Black. Those whom are Frist Responders only are blue and those fire fighters that are cross trianed have a star of life on thier helmets. Have a great one folks.

We run similarly,
White for the Chief
Red for Deputy and Captains
Yellow for LT and Firefighters
For those that are medic trained they where the blue patch on thier respective helmets.
Proby's are also in Yellow, But don't go on calls till after proby is complete

Cheif is white
Platoon Cheif is white
Cheif of Dangerous Goods and Investigations have white
Dont know what District cheifs have but i think they are white'
Officers are Red
Firefighters are Yellow
Probies are yellow as far as i know because thats all i have seen
Medic trained doesnt get any special markings
EMS has blue ones
Im not a firefighter so this might not be 100% right but its pretty close.
Im talking about Edmonton by the way so if anyone sees this and i am wrong they can correct it.

Billy i like the idea of the actings helmets, they wear the stripes when they are acting but when in full turnout including helmet its hard to tell whos acting but with the red band around the black helmet, yeah you know that the guy is acting when you see the red band as opposed to just the black helmet
colin911
10-20-2004, 09:51 AM
I agree with what Red_Devil said about the acting helmets, great idea ... our firefighters have red helmets and captains have yellow, chiefs have white, but no distinction of when a firefighter is the acting captain. It can be kind of confusing when you're wondering where the captain is, and all you see is red helmets!
Something I might suggest to the higher ups.

Firefighterkid, the different colour shields on the FDNY helmets represent what kind of apparatus they are assigned to. I think blue is rescue, black is engine and red is ladder(correct me if I'm wrong). The red helmets may be volunteer. New York city actually has some volunteer companies in the city. I think one of the volunteer companies lost their truck at the World Trade Centre.

Let me get this straight...you can choose which helmet your going to wear? Even though you're in other equipment supplied by the department (ie: coat and pants) you will be wearing other safety equipment supplied by your full-time employer?
Who's SOG's do you operate under? And, does the fire department lose an important member of their team while your wearing "blue"?
Are there any other departments here in Canada that have SOG's allowing this? Anyone?

I would think they are all black red and white now.Pre amalgamation the different depts had different colour lids.
Old TO wore black with captains in red and chiefs in white.
Etobocoke,North York etc all wore yellow helmets, capts and chiefs same as above.
I guess they are either old pics or there are a few diehards that havent traded in their old for new.

We don't have any other ranks, other than pecking order in the crews. With a total of 13 members, our normal turnout is about 8 or 9, which works out well (Chief = IC, each DC commands a three or four person unit, each unit generally has at least two experienced ff's).
Unfortunately, a neighboring fd uses red for FF's and yellow for DC's and CPT's, which can get confusing during training, as well as they're an automatic call when we have an MVA in our area (we aren't equiped with hydraulics).

White: Director, Asst. Director
Red: Capt & Lt
Yellow: Regular Member (can't call us firefighters since we aren't)
Probies wear Yellow helmets with red turn out gear (patch coats actually) which will change soon. All helmets have the department crest on the front and their badge number on the side. those who are first responders have a star of life on the back.
If anyone has ideas, we're looking into changing the helmets a bit... New shield, maybe with the persons # on it and for officers, have their number on the sides and their rank on the shield (since there are 2 positions that share the same color) and have their number put on the side since there wouldn't be enough room. Right now we are wearing Cairns 660's and there are a few Bullards hanging around but the problem is that we can't put a leather shield on the front, which is too bad cause they look good and there's more room.
Also, once the probies get a bunker like everyone else, what could we do to identify them??? We don't have the budget to get 5 black helmets so I'm guessing some semi-permanant sticker on the sides.... any thoughts?

These positions are permanently staffed by members who are assigned to fire headquarters. They work days, and are off at night. In most cases there is an on-call member that carries a pager during the night time hours, so should they be required at an incident, they can be paged and requested to attend.
Typically you will see these members in attendance of any fire that is a second alarm or greater. Health and Safety essentially assists with making sure that firefighters are getting rehabed as needed, that there are proper rehab facilities on scene, and basically that all firefighters on scene are safe and healthy.
Disaster services and Community safety work together with the victims of the fire. Essentially Disaster services will look after finding them alternate living arangements, making sure that they are able to get any important salvageable property or documents out of the house and so on. Community safety will assist to some extent with this, and also is very involved in the community as a part of our "After the Fire" program. Community safety officers will visit homes in the neighborhood where the fire occured to pass along fire safety and prevention information, as well as to answer any questions or concerns that residents may have after wittnessing a large loss fire in their area.
These programs have all worked very well, and we have received a lot of positive feedback from the community.
