Now the IAO recognizes that municipalities cannot alway afford new apparatus and or will utilize an apparatus beyond the the 20yrs, However they reccommend that the apparatus be recertificed for annually to ensure that it meets it original ratings and copies of the annual test forwarded to the IAO to enable them to detremine adequacy of the apparatus for insurance grading purposes.

Hey bfrd22,

I have never realy looked at this but it makes sense. From what I understand of what you have said, the rate to which the individual citizen's fire insurance is calculated against is set by, among other things, the age of the equipment servicing the area and the last time a annual test was forwarded to the IAO.

I take it that a certified app tech would have to be the one performing the testing. Or does the equip have to be sent to certain testing centers? This is suppost to be done anually?

Let me know when you can, I'm rather curious about this.

Thanx,

Let's be safe out there!!

Generally what happens is Fire Underwritters will come in to a community every 3 or 4 years. And review your tests. In our station we do annunal pump tests and inspections on all our units by a 3rd party.

1st . Annual testing and routine inspections are a must in today litigation happy world. The $ spent on annual testing and appartaus inspectons by a 3rd party is well worth it.

Audit wise, Generally they look at your fire load in a communty/ MD and calculate the water flow requirements needed. Then basically you have to show that you have the hydrant system or mobile water delivery system in place, and also that you have suffiecent pumping capacity.

They also check that the units are ULC compliant.

Once this is all done they then adjust the Insuance Fire Rating for your community. (This information is provided to the Insurance carriers).

Now this is my understanding of the system and no doubt I may be out on soom issues.

However I'm BIG on Annual inspections and Planned Maintaince.

I have developed an excel spread sheet that covers most apparatus and creats specific inspections for apparatus based on weekly / bi weekly / monthly / semi ann and annual inspections. And is apparatus specific, be it a pumper. rescue or combination unit.

Now it has my co logo on it but it has been designed to be generic in that it will work for almost any brand of apparatus out there.

You can down load it from

let me know what you think.

Looks really cool, but it doesn't really work for a volley group.

Not to many of us can get people in to do daily checks to that level on the units. But I do like the format. Excellent work :)

Have a look at the bi weekly inspections, It was designed for Volly halls.

As it's on a excell spread sheet you can open it up and delete the stuff that doesn't apply to the specific unit and then resave it for that unit. Thus you have a customized insprection for the each apppatus.

Thats what I made it for.
Again I feel that there is no subsitute for a strong customizable inspection and Maint program.
