So... what is the make up of your HAZMAT team as far as level of training?
I was shocked to hear that most just have thier OPS, *gasp* some only have thier Awareness, Maybe a Tech or two. Scary

We have a mix of techs and awareness levels. The techs run the show, you will find them being sector officers and also working in teh actual hot zone. The awareness levels can also work in the hot zone under the direct supervison of the sector officers.

Red Devil, do you feel the guys at the awareness level have enough training? Do you feel confident working with someone who hasn't gained the knowlegde themselves, just follows orders? I dunno.... wouldn't catch me there.
I thought the OPS level was just that... Operational. The awareness training basically lets you identify the hazard and stay back, make a call.
I'm not criticizing... just discussing.

Wannabe, I believe all of the people assigned to the HAZ trucks are techs. However there are support vehicles like HAZ pumpers and HAZ aerials that do decon and other such jobs that may have a lower level.

that makes more sense, if that is the case.

On Toronto Fire we have two designated hazmat response trucks.
I am assigned to the haz truck down town.
All personnel assigned to trucks are NFPA 472 standard hazmat technicians.
The members assigned to the truck are also CBRN team members for the Province of Ontario and the city. We are each issued a gear bag with our anti-terrorism Saratoga hammer suit, C4 mask, canister, coveralls etc. that we carry with us.
Each of the 4 commands in the city have a hazmat pumper and decontamination aerial. These crews are trained to technician level as well, but do not have the experience of the haz truck crews. The pumper crews serve as extra manpower for us and the decontamination aerials setup and do the decontamination of the technicians when we leave the hot zone.
Some of our latest training involves us going to CFB Suffield in Alberta for WMD training with live agents. Great experience for us!

Hey Bestcoast
We have sent about 20 firefighters to CFB Suffield for WMD training.
I went in the first group from Toronto which also included medics from Toronto EMS and cops from Toronto from the ETF unit.
The training was quite intense and very demanding.

We just purchased the Peac-WMD software to be used as a resource at HazMat incident's. We have been training with it the last few weeks and I must say i'm pretty impressed. Anyone else using it?? And if you are what do you think??....BC...

Hey BC, looks interesting... do you have any idea how much you guys paid for it? They conveniently leave the pricing off thier website. Although I'm sure they have multiuser package of some sort for departments. Still, any idea?

No Idea, I think they will give you a demo of the program to see what you think of it but i'm not sure of that or the price. I'll ask when I go back to work and will let you know....BC....

thanks, I just watched a little demo of it on their site. Has everything right there doesn't it? pretty cool. The software could have many, many applications.. I'm sure they are marketing it to suit others as well.
