Victoria police and Saanich fire departments will be hit hardest by changes in pension plan regulations. But worries about a brain drain and shortages have subsided as new recruits and exempt staff line up to replace retiring senior officers and firefighters. "It's not the end of the world," Sgt. Don Bland, president of the Victoria police union, said Thursday. "We started recruiting and we've hired officers from Saanich, the Mounties, Oak Bay and New Westminster. We've come to terms with it. We're dealing with it, because what else do you do?"
