Wow, it certainly has been a while since I've added a new scenario.

Let's give this one a try. Might not be as polished as some of my previous scenarios, but lets hope it generates some useful conversation.

ENJOY!

---------------------------------------------------------

<BEEEP, BOOP, BEEEEEEEEEP..... Hopsville Fire from dispatch, respond to the the Aldi Grocery Store, 5467 Florida Avenue, for a confirmed report of smoke in the building.>

For this scenario you are the officer (a LT) on the second due engine (Engine 501). As you near the address the chief radios a situation report.

"All units, confirmed heavy smoke showing from Aldi Grocery Store. Possibility of people still inside."

A few minutes later you get on scene, the picture below shows the front of the Grocery Store.

The chief calls you over and gives you your orders.

"The manager (pointing to a guy covered in soot and coughing) doesn't think everyone has made it out yet. The smoke started coming in the back room, near the Bravo-Charlie corner and quickly filled the shopping section upfront. From here, it looks heavier on the Bravo side than the Delta side. Must be coming straight out the front doors without lingering to long inside.

Engine 502 is hitting the hydrant over there (pointing across the mall parking lot) and will relay pump to you. 502's crew will be your RIT and hose handler's at the door.

I want you and your crew to go in with a line and start the search in the front shopping section. Left or right, it is your decision, just let me and accountability know before you get in there. Once more units get on scene I'll send in another crew to help upfront.

Just so you know, Engine 509 is going in through some shipping doors in the back to try to find the fire.

As soon as we get a ladder on scene we'll see getting them in place to opening up the roof for you, if you decide you need it."

Other Information:
- Someone was nice enough to park their truck on the ALPHA side of the building.
- Your engine has 4 people on it, yourself as officer, a driver/pump operator and 2 experienced firefighters.
- Your attack lines are 200 feet of 1-3/4 hose.
- Your SCBAs are Carbon Fiber, 60min, cylinders.

Questions:
- What other questions might you have for the chief before going back to you're crew?
- Besides the charged line, what other equipment would you take with you and why?
- What else would you and your crew consider doing, if anything, before entering the building?

Once inside......
- Would you search left or right? Why?
- What hazards might you encounter inside?
- What problems might be associated with searching a Grocery Store style building? How would you overcome these problems?

As always, a bonus point for the make and model of the truck parked in front.

Sorry, I missed some of the page due to my departments CREST run pager system

I think a lot of people would trade CREST for FIRECOM anyday. HOWEVER, we don't seem to have it too bad in Sooke, at least with the FD channels/frequencies.

The first arriving chief could run in and out a few times, then open a back door to let some air in. Then he could send in a bunch of guys with booster lines. After that he would have all the glass in the front removed.

Oh wait a minute, that's what they did in Charleston and it doesn't work!!

RIP Charleston 9

As far as the truck goes, I am gonna say a 98-99 Ford F-150 2-Wheel drive, with Aluminum toolbox, aluminum steps, with a vent visors, and a bug deflector.

Looks like an 01-02 F150....4X4...XTR......oh ya....and it's green!

...and the way buddy parked his truck I'd say you might wanna look for him inside the supermarket.
A supermarket like that is going to be nasty for a primary from the A side. If you go in the front doors you'll probably run into a series of cash registers with narrow aisleways running parallel with the front window (A side). Search line with tethers might be an option (hey I'm still a rookie!). Offices/washrooms are typically in the A/B or A/D sides. Hard to tell if that smoke is moving fast....it looks very dense and black with lots of volume ...judging by the look of those front windows and the colour/volume of the smoke it should be heat driven....hot fire. Venting first would be safest way to go. Looks like things/conditions are changing very fast ......not for the good either. I'm guessing the seat of the fire is on the B side so I'd start searching the area closest to the fire and exit first focusing on the washrooms/offices/registers. Speaking of exits...very few in these types of buildings and I'm guessing that the only exit on the A/B corner could soon be where the fire is moving. I'd wanna make sure I have a second exit sourced out before I went in.....or at least some tools to make one...probably a maul. There appears to be only windows on the A and B side....I'd have a quick look at the D side. My primary concern would be protecting that exit on the A/B corner.
Hazards???/ Only about a gazillion....refridgeration/HVAC units on roof, lightweight roof construction in these buildings, limited exits, brick walls with very few windows, entanglement hazards galore near the front portion of the market....perhaps the biggest hazard is the fact that the meat section is going to be smelling pretty good and I'd have to try to stay focused.
I'll let some other chip in and comment on what they see and what I've said.

oh ya....that overhang section above the A/B corner would be a concern as well.

I pulled a "Costanza", ie I did the opposite....and look what happened.

"Fire loss stopped!"

It's got absolutely nothing to do with your skills....I thought a little humour might be appreciated.

Well with no firefighting expierence (just textbooks and online resources)bare with me, heres what'd I do...enrotue take in time of day (4-7pm grocery stores tend to be pretty busy), on arrival I see that there is a sawhorse out front, to me shows signs of a reno. The f-150 4x4,reg cab long box seems like a contractors truck (the metal box in the back to keep tools safe in, parking close to the worksite) pulls up to check on his crew. After being brought up to seed by the chief, i'd like an ETA on the ladder, take a halligan and an axe for tools(good combo to force open doors, and at a grocery store you'd come in contact with metal doors), before heading in go around the building to get a better picture of it, search nearest the front exit and go to the right along A side by the cash registers. Inside, if it is a reno going on, extension chords to watch out for, power tools, building materials...could be solvents inside. Roof truses could be exposed to alot of heat, could cause some warping, HVAC ontop..doesnt help, wouldn't there be a sprinkler system in place? Id keep in contact with engine 509 so they could give me updates on what they find and the same back to them. Feel free to comment!
