Nanton News — Picture this: the smoke alarm in your home awakens you in the middle of the night. You can’t see far through the smoke and are having trouble breathing. You drop to the floor and safely make it out to discover not everyone from your home is with you. A loved one hasn’t heard the alarm. Wouldn’t you rather know this could happen ahead of time? People who are elderly, tired, work shifts, are hearing impaired or children under 15 can sleep through smoke alarms. All it takes is someone being a deep sleeper and rolling over when the alarm goes off, thinking “it must be a false alarm.” Every alarm can mean a real fire. The only way to find out potential dangers such as this is by having a home fire drill and practising a fire escape plan at night. Then make sure there’s a plan for someone to alert the family member who has a hard time waking to the alarm.
