A recent legal discovery has put the brakes on supervisors and first response units in Ontario's Paramedic community while responding to scenes.

Amendments to the Highway Traffic Act permit the use of red lights and sirens on non-ambulance configured vehicles, however, the use of these vehicles was not addressed in the Ambulance Act. The technicality is that there is no provision in the Ambulance act for the use of these vehicles and they do not fit the definition of an Ambulance.

So, in case you notice a difference at the scenes of your calls lately, where there are no Yukon's or Mini-vans rolling up with bulbs on and sirens wailing, that is why.

I am sure there are some red faced office people somewhere frantically working to adjust this oversight
