Hey guys. Just wondering how your shift rotation works and how often you change positions on the truck and how often you change trucks and how often you change stations.
I live in Edmonton and here its like this:
2 Days 2 nights 2 Off 2 Days 2 Nights 6 Off
Change positions on the truck every block (im not a firefighter so im not exactly sure what a block is, i think it might be the rotation i just described)
Depending on what station you are at is how often you change trucks. Captians and Lieutenant do not change but the firefighters change every block eg. say you are in a station with a pump and a rescue ( both have 4 guys here ). You go Pump right rear Pump left rear Pump Drive Rescue Right rear Rescue left rear Rescue drive then back to the pump.
Change stations like every 5 years average.

Our rotaton is 4 - 10 hour dayshifts,6 days off, 3-14 hour night shifts,5 days off, 2 - 10 hour dayshifts, 1 - 24 hour shift, 3 - 14 hour night shifts, 4 days off. All of this occurs over a one month period and this would be considered a block. in My hall we have a pump , rescue and a ladder and you spend 1 month on all positions ie. driver, backstep.
I have been in the same hall for ten years. We only have two stations so you have to cause trouble to be moved.:D

In Toronto we work 4 days, 7 off, 4 nights, 4 off, 3 days,1 off, 3 nights, 4 off. start all over.
In Toronto we are assigned to a specific apparatus. Our former chief (Speed) tried to force us to rotate between rigs but we fought against it. This is still on the books but we have been told that this issue might finally be killed.
Old Toronto was always assigned to a rig (pumper, squad, aerial, aerial tower, high rise, haz, boat)etc. We liked this system and it gave pride to crews and their particular job at a call like FDNY, Chicago etc.

The pilot program for the 24 hour is going to be in Disitrict 42 for a year trial and it is starting in January. It is a definite go, the vacation and lieu day selection process has been posted for the stations in District 42.
Guys in that district cannot transfer out and other guys cannot transfer in. The only personnel movements will be for promotional reasons for the one year trial.

Same shift as Leafs Fan,
Captain adjusts the staffing board as he sees fit, and station rotations vary.

How many year's do you spend at a Hall before being transfered to a different one. Usually 3 or 4 years for us depending on whether you are on a specialty team or not. And how often are guys cross shifted??.....BC.......

Station changes are a tough call, they like the experienced guys at the busier halls but they also like to move the younger recruits in too, kinda a catch 22, we usually put in for station transfers, but sometimes it is "suggested" by the platoon office, as for shift changes touchy subject, officers move to different shifts lots but when fire fighters do it lots of rumours start flying.

With us, they like to move the newer guys around for the first 2-3 years to different stations so that they get a taste of everything like being on a squad, aerial, hazmat or tech. rescue.
As for changing shifts, exactly what FireKnight said ... Captains all the time for promotional reasons or acting lists, but if a FF moves it's probably because the DC's can't stand them!

Cross shifting used to be quite rare as well on our job. Officers were moved to fill postions but rarely FF's. The Deputy in-charge off staff alterations has been doing it more lately for some reason. Maybe to balance out seniority on some shift's, but I think he does it only because he can.......I've managed to stay on the same shift for the last ten years but who know's come next transfer list.......BC.....

Hey guys.... yes, the 2002 list was finished in December of 2004. I am on the 2003 list. He will have to apply again this spring... the website should be updated soon... usually the application/resume package has to be in the end of May (may change this year though, most other things are). My list is active until the end of December, but so far they're only taking 11 new recruits to fill a class of 24... 13 were hired last fall but were not able to go to Drill School, due to funding I guess... so I'll be re-applying as well!

I love it. The best part is at 4 o'clock you're not going, "Where's my man?" I haven't missed the afternoon drive at all. Another problem we had was with 6 former cities everyone's afternoon shift change was at a different time so it caused tension between the brothers. I have also already noticed how much less gas I'm using too.
