Last week, an elite team of Quebec firefighters sent to battle British Columbia's massive forest fires took its first break, capping a 17-day stint of uninterrupted work. Despite the 14-hour days, exhausting physical labour and out-of-control fires they face, nearly the entire team decided to stay and keep fighting. "We'll be here at least a month, and after that, there's no guarantee that we won't need to stay even longer," said team chief Vincent Demers yesterday by telephone from Castlegar
