I don't believe IAFF permit's casual firefighters to be a part of the union, even if the "casual" FF is working towards 40+ hours/week. Does anyone have any other info on this or how your department handles casual/PT firefighters?

Basically to be in the IAFF you must be at the time of making an application to the union is engaged in service within the jursidiction of the Association, including ALL FULLTIME PAID EMPLOYEES, engaged in firefighting, medical response or rescue service activities will be eligible for active membership in the association through its chartered locals or provincial associations. BUT.....The Association may allow other categories of employees as required by applicable state, provincial or U.S. or Canadian federal laws, subject to appropriate documentation and the approval of the General President.
For further information: email join@IAFF.org.

hope this helps!

Slippery slope there. We have closed shops in Canada There is an argument regarding part timers that the union has a "duty of fair representation" towards these members even if they are laid off and not currently employed or paying union dues. I believe Hull fell afoul of this somehow a few years ago. Any Ottawa guys here? They may know more.

To the best of my understanding any member whether part-time casual or full time has to be a member of the union, and the union is responsible to represent them while they are working
