Hello I've been a member for a couple of months now, and have not really had the opportunity to get to know any of you yet. But hey we are all Brothers and Sisters right!!! Here's my problem, I have been a volunteer firefighter for 4yrs. My occupation is an Underground Hard Rock Miner, because of this occupation I was lucky enough to try out for and make the Ontario Mine Rescue Team. My work schedule is a gruelling 28 10hr shifts then 14 days off. I am married have a 1 1/2yr daughter and a 5yr old son. Because of my schedule I have to give something up. I wish it could be work but ....lol. I love the Fire Dept. But I also stand the chance of getting to save the lives of my fellow workers in the unthinkable event of underground fire. If anyone has had to make a choice like this please give me some wisdom
Remember everyone loves the firefighters!!!

This may sound harsh but I will say it!! You are only a volounteer and it is not paying your bills. So if you have the chance to do mine rescue then by all means do so. That can be just as gratifying.

You have a family to support, Period, Many have had to make this choice, It's hard to find a good paying job that you like.
You can always come back to the service if you situation changes, Don't give up your day job just to ride on a firetruck.
It's a hard choice and needs to be made with your head not your heart.

Thanks for the input but I've given it alot of thought and I'm going to try and stay with the Mine Rescue Team and the Fire department. ;)

Yep on the 28 days you can be an asset to the Mine Rescue team, and if you have the time, just as an asset to the FD. On your 14 off, well the FD will both enjoy having you there and you can still support your family.
Glad to hear you worked it out, good luck and have fun! :)
