On March 4th 2008, Firefighter Mathieu Émond of the Varennes Fire Dept has died in the line of duty while fighting a house fire in Varennes.
He leaves behind a wife and daughter and extended family, as well as his colleagues of the Varennes fire dept where he's been a volunteer firefighter for two years, and the Longeuil fire dept where he was starting a carreer.

Death of Mathieu Émond: 700 e-mails of comfort to the family

Private funeral will be organized for the fireman Mathieu Émond, deceased in the night of Tuesday in Varennes, learned the Newspaper from various sources.
After a meeting of several hours with the representatives of the municipality and of the FD of Varennes yesterday afternoon, the members of the family of the 26 year old fireman chose this formula rather than for civic funeral since they wishes to live this tough experience in private. "the members of the family wanted a ceremony more intimate", entrusted a source to us.
The funeral will take place probably Monday afternoon, in the Sainte-Anne-de-Varennes basilica.
The official announcement will be made this morning (Thursday) by the municipal authorities of Varennes.
As of yesterday, more than 700 people had sent an e-mail to the town of Varennes to offer their condolences to the family of Mathieu Émond and to pay homage to the young fireman who died to the combat. "They come from everywhere to Quebec, in Canada, in the United States and even of l'Europe", explains the spokesman of the City, Pierre Guy Dallaire.

Des funérailles intimes seront organisées pour le pompier
Mathieu Émond de Varennes
Varennes, le 6 mars 2008 – La Ville de Varennes, avec l’approbation de la famille du défunt, tiendra des funérailles intimes avec hommage protocolaire pour le pompier Mathieu Émond, décédé tragiquement mardi dernier alors qu’il combattait un incendie.
La cérémonie se tiendra le lundi 10 mars, à 14 h à la basilique Sainte-Anne de Varennes.
La famille ainsi que les autorités de la Ville accueilleront uniquement les proches et amis de la famille de Mathieu Émond, les pompiers de Varennes, les pompiers de Longueuil, les membres de l’aide mutuelle de l’Association industrielle de Varennes, les membres de l’entraide mutuelle intermunicipale ainsi que quelques personnalités publiques.
La dépouille du pompier Mathieu Émond sera exposée en chapelle ardente à l’hôtel de ville de Varennes, le dimanche 9 mars, de 13 h 30 à 17 h et de 19 h à 22 h ainsi que le lundi 10 mars de 11 h 30 à 13 h.
La population pourra alors lui rendre un dernier hommage.
Il est possible pour la population de transmettre des messages de sympathies à la famille de Mathieu Émond via le site Internet de la Ville de Varennes à l’adresse www.ville.varennes.qc.ca.
Des fleurs pourront êtres livrées à l’hôtel de Ville de Varennes,
situé au 175, rue Sainte-Anne et des dons à l’organisme Opération Enfant Soleil seraient appréciés.
Selon la volonté de la famille, aucun média ne sera admis à l’intérieur de la basilique et de
l’hôtel de ville.

Sorry if i am late for giving information, it's because my computer was out of service since 5 weeks. The young FF was a new member in our departement since 1 month and he maid 2 week of work at my last station and was on my team worker. He was VF at Varenne since 2 years and one of the other guy with was to a VF at Varenne but was working regulary at Longueuil since 1 year and half. So he had more experience. I didn't heard the resolte of the coroner but i had the information when he was found, he had his full face in the face and was sick in his mask. Probably it was his first big fire and he hyperventilate him self by excitement. Or he had fell fint. I was very sorry for him. So young to die with a young baby at home. My daughter live in Varenne and we read all the news paper for more information.
