Well I did it. I took on a challenge. I have started a fitness program. It all started when I decided I am going to apply for wildland firefighter this summer with Nova Scotia DNR. This year, the province is intorducing a new physical test. I know I can do medium level, which is the one new hires have to pass (2 miles in 30 minutes with 25 pounds on your back) but I am going to try for the higher level (3 miles in 45 minutes with 45 pounds). Only advanced crews and Helitack have to pass this, but I owe it to myself to do better, and, if I can do that, it will look better if there is much competition for the job.
I have been doing 2 miles on the treadmill a day, and so far I think it is working. Any other training ideas? Any advice?

Good for you mate...taking up the challenge is always the first step to attaining your goals.
Firefighting with DNR is hardwork, I know a few Ex DNR firefighters and they are worth their weight in gold....they are no BS brothers who I would have alongside me anytime !

Good for you. Without sounding like a cult leader, check out the crossfit site. Its pretty specific training for that type of work. Just get yourself checked out before you start and do only what you are able as it is pretty taxing training. Good luck with it!

You could always pick up a training vest which pack on anywhere from 25-50 pounds of weight (or more if you're nuts). A tad on the expensive side but makes for a great workout.

Agreed, just make sure you start off light (@ 5-10 lbs) and work up to prevent spine injury. I also bought and hung gym rings for pull ups, dips and pushups, etc. A great and portable workout for about 80 bucks. I found the weights and treadmill take you only so far. The functional training is a great supplement.
