I've just recently started following up on the 'I wish' of becoming a firefighter, and I can only get a sketchy idea of how long it actually takes to get started as a Probie... I'm in Toronto now, but will go pretty much anywhere in BC, Alberta or California as well...

How long is the average recruitment process, through to completion?

Depending on your qualifications, it could be as little as your first time writing the entrance exam, then after that it could be as little as a couple of months before being a recruit, or it could be as long as up to 1-2 years if you're on a hiring list/pool.

But on average I would say between 2 - 5 years before being hired, and some guys I got on with took ten years.

For me, it was 3 years and many entrance exams with Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughn, London before I got on in Brampton.

You'll hear this a lot in your quest for a career position: Take as many courses as you can, and at least 1 every 3-4 months to show that you want to continue your education.

ps. Volunteer!!!! Volunteer with anything ... Fire, hospital, Red Cross, homeless shelter ... you want to show that you care about your community.
Big, Big plus in the interviews.
