I'm curious as to whether anyone experienced an increase in the number of fire related calls due to more candles etc. being used during Earth Hour last Saturday night

Much ado about Nothing. I worked that shift, looked out across the street at all of the highrises and it looked like a typcial Saturday night with all of the lights shining. We set a good example and turned all the lights off in the hall. Nothing notable across the city (Toronto) when looking at the active incidents for that time period.

Same as LGT here ... we did all we could around the hall, turning off everything for the hour, and the rest of the night for that matter. We wanted to turn the radio off, but the captain wouldn't let us :).
But nothing out of the ordinary for the city.

I was at the earth hour celebrations downtown and they were actually telling people to blow out the candles and use glow sticks.. They had city staff go around and tell people for safety reasons and the large crowd volume that candles were not acceptable at the event. There were a bunch of EMS vans and a station because it was a high risk area. All the EMS were full when I walked by the station seemed like it was getting its fair share of injuries ect
Cheers....

I know that Earth hour was about rasing awareness and not to actually save the planet in an hour.
So call me cynical but if every building in Downtown Toronto had to have a guy go and turn off all the lights for an hour it would probably be a power engineer.
Power engineers in my experience like to drive half ton trucks. From what I know about Toronto lots of people commute in. Soooo... if every downtown building had a guy in a truck driving in that night just to shut off the lights how much CO2 did all those trucks commuting create?

One hour of turning off the lights will have no practical effect on CO2 emissions, but it is a) symbolic and b) a great 'marketing ' technique to increase people's awareness that there is a problem and they are part of the solution"... i think that was the best way of suming things up so far regarding the issue of CO2 emissions .. its obviously a long term goal but we have to start somewhere right?
All those idled cars at tim hortons .. hmm imagine Canada with no drive through Timmies .. ;)

I too worked that night in TO and had no more calls than normal. I did not see a large number of buildings down town with their lights out.

DH .... we always go to CO2 monitors going off after someone warms their car in the garage in the morning or after discharging an extinguisher ;).

I heard some cities are planning to enforce idling bylaws at Timmies. When the lines are long and slow you are supposed to sut your engine off while at a standstill. The plan is to decrease idle emmisions and try to encourage more folks to use the counter.
Summer, maybe. Forty friggen below, not a chance. :D

I aint no scientist either but I know that CO2 does come out of a tailpipe as well as CO and bunch of other really bad stuff like benzene that we tend to ignore.
The global warming proponents are always ranting about "metric tons of CO2" going up into the atmosphere...
BTW... Toxic walks for no coffee. I love the cupholders in my redneck 4X4 truck too much.

Yeah I'm glad to see the world trying to cut back on the emmisions. Like oviously an hour of no lights once a year isnt gonna put a big dent in stopping global warming, but at least they're making some action.

You are going to have to start doing that Figure 8 racing circuit in electric golf carts to save on emissions.
