Noel Hornby has been a firefighter for 24 years, but nothing prepared him for the massive blazes he and four fellow firefighters saw at the McGillvray Lake fire, near Chase, last week. "It was awe-inspiring, it took a day or two to realize how big an area it covered," said Hornby, a captain with the Nanaimo Fire Department. "It would be like having three Mount Bensons on fire at the same time." He and four other Nanaimo firefighters returned on the weekend.
