KELOWNA -- The smoke is chokingly thick and the heat intense on the front lines of the Okanagan Mountain forest fire. Flames are everywhere in the bush, three days after this massive blaze tore through a neighbourhood in south Kelowna, devouring 248 homes and forcing thousands of people to flee. For perhaps the first time, officials say, a small group of journalists has been allowed to join B.C. Forest Service firefighters during a night shift as they battle an active fire.
