KELOWNA -- In the Victoria fire control office are three eight-foot by 12-foot screen maps of the province, each peppered with blinking lights representing fire hazards, firefighters deployment, air and ground resources. In the daily battle against nearly 800 wildfires in B.C., this is the equivalent of a war room and in the centre of the action, watching and knowing what each flicking light means is John Flanagan, who, for this week at least, is the man in charge of it all. Flanagan, 49, is one of six provincial fire control officers for the B.C. Forest Service, in charge of deploying and supplying an army of 4,700 firefighters, support staff and other personnel who are waging a daily battle against more than 800 forest fires burning across the province.
