CRESCENT BEACH, BC - For years, the Peninsula has supported Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit 5 Crescent Beach. Once again, the unit has proven worthy of that support-and that they're putting the community's cash donations and sponsorships to good use. Dave Marsden, Ken Morrice, Duane Currie and Sig Kristensen returned from the 2004 International Search and Rescue competition in Portsmouth, Va., after winning the event-tied for first-place with a team from Quebec. "It gives some credibility to our training," Marsden, the team's coxswain, said Friday. "For the people who support us, it says to them, 'We're not out here wasting your money.' It shows we have the professionalism and the ability to get out and (prove lifesaving ability) even when (the real thing)'s not happening on a regular basis." Pacific Region auxiliary teams have won at the international level before. However, this is the first time the Crescent Beach crew made the grade. They won a zone competition in Point Roberts in April, then the Pacific Region competition in Nanaimo in May. The international competition, Nov. 5 and 6, pitted six Canadian and six American teams in events testing their ability to plan, communicate and execute a mission.
