Cranbrook braced for the worst as an out-of-control wildfire roared to within 500 metres of homes in rural areas south of the city and firefighting crews were forced into multiple retreats ahead of the flames Wednesday night. About 150 people living southwest of the city of Cranbrook have been evacuated from their homes as the community prepares for what officials are warning could be a repeat of the firestorm that swept into Kelowna, destroying 248 homes last week. The evacuations occurred as the wind-whipped flames of the Lamb Creek forest fire came within 500 metres of some structures near Munroe Lake, about 12 kilometres south of Cranbrook.
