You guys find the minitor 4's any better than the three's?

None of the guys seem to be complaining, i will ask around on Wednesday night.. i do know that they love the fact that it records the page...... so if you are going into a steel building and know you aren't going to get a page..they leave it in the car...and when they return they look and see if something happened...i know i would like that feature.............

Any Motorola dealer should have them. Depends where you live. We deal from London ON. And get a minitor 2 if you can. they have always been good, and I know the 3's suck. No experiance witht he 4's.

The minitor 4 has been a fantastic pager, the three's gave some problems but they seem to be fixed now... its just too bad they don't float... if you are ever at Mink Lake and here tones going off..... please notify us..thanks

go for a IV if you can, or failing that, a II... the III's have been nothing but a load of trouble...

Squamish might have a dusty box full of III's. We pitched them after one year of use cause they kept falling apart and dying. Motorola refused to repair them anymore, because they said they were getting out of the paging business.

We've gone to a new "military" style pager. They are digitally progammable, and can be used as two way portables as well. The volunteers have six pager channels, depending on company, or if you want to monitor dispatch. The fulltimers have six pager channels, dispatch, tac 1, and 10 other radio channels, like EHS, forestry etc. They work pretty good, but they are twice as big as a minitor II, or III, and they're heavier too. Some guys are resisting swiching over, they are waiting untill their minitors are completly dead.

very cool... if you have any extra info on that in terms of brand names etc., could you maybe email it to me? i'd run it by our chief... we've had colossal headaches due to minitors (especially the III's, but also of all varieties due to crappy service companies).

why would anyone what a pager anymore when they are almost$400.00 You can buy a good portable that has built in paging for around $350.00 (kenwood tk-2160) 2 tone encode, decode per channel, man down, transpond,

Smaller and easier to carry. I work around cars and can't afford to scratch them. When at the movies or out for supper you don't have to listen to chatter on the radio. And just my opinion...we have Kenwoods and they are pieces of crap....we will never buy them again, nothing but motorola's for our dept.
Just my nickle and a half,
be safe

yup you got it... big-ass radios don't bode well for going out for a nice dinner with someone, the movies, or being at work... they're considerably heavier, too, which would be a pain as well. i can't even imagine trying to drive with a radio on your belt... lol... but i can leave my pager on my belt and drive just fine. lots of general situations like this... the size/convenience factor is high enough with a pager to warrant the extra $$$.
as for motorola vs kenwoods... i have heard nary a complaint about a motorola radio, they are built like the proverbial brick s__thouse and work like a charm (and are quickly fixed in the rare occasion of one actually breaking). slightly less glowing reports have been heard about other brands....

Hey, I've got some info on our pager/radios' for you. They are Vertex VX-210AV, and we got them through Glentel Business in Vancouver ( 1-800-661-2214). As I said, they are digitally programmable as a pager or a radio, or both. The range and clarity are pretty good, but then we are on a repeater so range isn't too much of a problem. They can carry up to 16 channels. They have an antenna on them, which is a bit of a pain. Some of the guys have 6" antennas and mine is cut down to 2.5". I have had no problem receiving pages with the shorter antenna. They cost about the same as the minitors, but they are a bit bulkier and heavier.
Thats about all that I could get from the DC. Oh, they have lithium batteries, that charge in about 1.5 hrs, and, supposedly last for up to four days, but I charge mine every night, so I don't know about that....

With a portable radio you don't necessarily have to listen to open channels. Most decient portables offer paging "quick call II" options. Thus allowing any specific channel to be programmed like a pager.
Though I agree they are considerably heavier and bulkier than pagers but if I was watching the $$$ I would go with the portable.
