View Full Version : Essentials 4th Edition/5th Edition
Hey everyone,
I have a few questions that I hope can be answered. I am currently using the Essentials of Fire Fighting 4th Edition for all my training with my Volunteer Dept. We are currently in the process of switching to the 5th edition, where to my understanding we will be following that edition for the modules for the Level 1 & 2 certification.
My questions are...
1) To those that have reviewed both editions, how close are they?
2) Are career departments now basing their examinations on the 5th edition? Or are the majority still with the 4th edition?
3) I have purchased the study guide for the 4th and 5th edition to be safe. How different are the two study guides?
4) Is the First Responder section in the 5th Edition similar to the First Responder Level III training?
Thank you,
-Cam
Anybody want to take a stab at this?

1. Pretty close but I find the new edition has a lot more detail and flashy pictures. Also comes with a mini-study section which is nice.
2. It's all pretty much the same stuff regardless of edition. If you studied the 4th edition you will do fine.
3. Never used them so I wouldn't know.
4. I have my PCP so I never botherd to look at it.
3) So far, going through the 4th edition and 5th edition study guides, I prefer the way the 5th edition is laid out. All multiple choice and a fair number of questions. I think the 4th study guide is a better way to "learn" because of the amount of written answers required, but personally I feel I should have already learned this and now I am studying.
We'll see when I start writing my modules which helped more.
