Does it really matter what time they come in at? im thinking they can come at anytime

Generally just before dinner, or after midnight.

RedDevil, No it doesn't matter but why do you care, it was a simple question requiring a simple answer, something you failed to provide.

I know that they can come in at any time.

You also stated some where that you are not a Fire Fighter.

JGallagher, like most large cities these "major" calls as you call them come in at anytime. There is no specific time period where more multiple alarms, hazmat calls, high angle calls etc... are greater than any other time period in the day.....

FireEMTGuy

I'd have to agree that "major" calls (major being a 4+ alarm fire) in larger cities such as Edmonton or Calgary can and do happen at any time during the day/night.

Ya wow, the guy asks a simple question and everyone jumps on him. But most people are right in saying that they come it at anytime. I know in Edmonton that big fires have happened at all hours and I dont know for sure when the average time would be.

And just to let you know FireEMTGuy - Edmonton hasn't had a 4th alarm for like at least 10 years if ever. If they had one it was the Clareview Condo fire but other then that not for awhile but a few 3 alarms.

Kid, you completly contradicted yourself in that statement.

The Clareview Condo fire last winter WAS a 4 alarm fire.

Also for clairification could you ask (your source) what consititues a 2/3/4 alarm fire in regards to pumps, aerials, cars/command, rescue's, etc etc?

Also what would you (or your source) consider (in regards to alarms) the following edmonton fires:

March 2003 - Alberts restraunt fire
March 2003 - Downtown apartment fire (where five firefighters were trapped)

January 2004 - Chinese Market fire
January 2004 - Clareview condo fire
January 2004 - Lilydale Foods fire

October(?) 2004 - Cash Canada pawn shop fire

Just curious.

We have had 3 house fires in the last month and all were between the hours of midnight and 3 AM.

We've had 3 house fires in the last 4 days, at 7:30 in the morning, 1:00 in the afternoon and 4 in the afternoon. There goes my theory of having them usually at night.

Most of our calls, use to be in the evening, now i would say majority are during the day usually just before or after lunch......

Let me see. Last 3 majors. Major fire#1 100 year old Chinese restaurant. Core building plus 8 (yes 8) renovations/additions, was like a rabbit warren inside. 20 minutes of trying interior attack, then revert to protect exposures, -35 temps. call in at 0845, 4 Depts, 5 pumpers, 52 firefighters. Back to hall at 2100. Major fire #2, 80 year old hotel. Call in at 1625, 3 departments, 28 firefighters, 4 pumpers, fire in heating duct chase under bar floor, accesible only from basement stairwell. Sunday aft. so it was well involved before it was called in. Back to hall 2200. Major fire #3 70 year old dwelling call in at 2350 1 department 2 pumpers 16 firefighters -30 temps.

So they come in at all times, but oddly enough they were all Sunday calls.

uh huh. Hopefully we will be getting a digital camera (pref. video) this year. We have a few of the restaraunt fire from a civilain with his brand new digital. I'll see if I can find them. 100 years of soaked in cooking by-products makes for a warm fire:eek: ! We had done a tour of the building about a year earlier, and when we couldn't knock it down fast, and the ceiling was burning above and behind the attack crews, we made a decision to go defensive. No damage to adjoining buildings. Sure was a lot of hose to roll/clean/dry!

A few of the hotel fire on 35mm.

The house, not enough people to delegate one to "Photography Officer" :D

Funny? thing about rest. fire, one of the best snowmobile poker derbies in this part of MB was on that day. 12 members came to the hall in their snomo gear. 20 minutes later with the page and the Chief, Deputy, Asst Deputy, and 9 of the working guys would have been 5 miles out of town on their sleds! Needless to say there was a certain amount of b****ing and moaning about how we could have been riding. :D Bored a hole in the lake ice, set up one pumper down there and laid 2 runs of 4" hi-vol up to feed 2 pumpers. other two ran off of hydrants. It was a pretty wild scene. But it co-ordinated well. 1st handline was putting water on the fire within 7 minutes of original page. But it was already so involved, and in so many nooks and crannies we couldn't knock it down. No- one hurt, including the 3 people in the living quarters.

Time frame was rest. fire Feb 02, hotel Oct 02, House Dec 03

And BTW we have had some major grass fires too. One day in May 2003, we were out to 3 big ones, all mutual aid calls. That day one of our neighbouring departments had 6 grass calls! No shift changes for vollies:) .

A few week's back we went to a call for a dog bite. B&E suspect was chased down by a police dog and suffered a nasty bite to the arm. Oh yah the Dog's name was "Major" so this was a true major call.....:D :D

K I havent read this in awhile so I reply to the best of my knowledge.

In a building that may have many occupants ( schools colleges high rise )

1 Alarm - 3 Pumps 2 Aerials 1 Rescue i dont know how it goes up after that i think it doubles except for rescues

In a less occupied building like a house then its

2 Pumps 1 Aerial 1 Rescue

I dont know when cheifs or command show up

Alberts was a 2 or 3 alarm

Downtown was 3 because the aerials didnt work because they could not find a level place to raise them

Market was 2

Lilydale was 3

Cash Can was 3
