I am interested in finding out what kind of Line Of Duty Death Benefits your Volunteer Departments have - or don't have. I'd like to keep this thread dealing strictly with volunteer departments, as career departments are a whole different category.
Right now, my department has a one time payout of $50,000 - which to me is ridiculous. None of us do this for the money, but if I am killed in the line of duty, the job I did do for the money isn't going to pay my family a dime, and that is who I'm concerned about.
I'm sick of our fire departments nickel and diming their membership when we provide this service to the community free of charge! We have to beg borrow and steal for new gear and equipment, repair things ourselves and fight tooth and nail for everything we do get. I don't think the OPP officers in town are walking around with 5 bullets in their clips because of budget restraints!
My point is that the least our communities can do for us, for our families, is provide them with financial support that will last longer that a year our two should we die in the line of duty.

My question then is - "What kind of LODD benefit packages do your departments have and who pays the premiums?" Thanks for letting me vent and taking the time to respond.

Teacher man your do'in better than us on our dept one time payout of 10 K. Pretty much enough to put ya in a box eh. You bet it sucks, Some may say voluteers are slow to react, I dont thinks so. Just thinking about the consequences a little harder. I know thats crappy to say but theres all those reasons at home to get back there and if the municipality is'nt going to kick in especially in a unpiad service and help out home in a god forbid event our crews have to be that much more prudent in our actions. Holy I think you done lit my cadle. Going to have to get organized and change this s**t.

We're insured through VFIS and get a $150,000 death benifit payout. There are other clasus that can increase that amount by up to $40,000.

I think we get coverage better than all that is mentioned. We just got it about 1 year ago and it was really quite surprising how well we are covered. I know we are covered 24/7 even if we are hurt away from the hall. And immediate family is covered as well. (Spouse and Children) Everything is covered from digit and limb loss all the way to death. The company is striclky for Volly departments and they have excellent service. I have the brochure in my locker at the hall, I will get it next time I am home. Every dept should have this insurance, and I think it costs around 3g's a year for a 24 man roster. Very good price. Ill get back to you for sure.

Sounds like VFIS to me........

We have to pay for our extra coverage from non-fire department events (and calls) but it's cheap compaired to anything else out there..... I pay about $90 a year for the extra coverage.
