MAPLE RIDGE, BC - Local firefighters will be at grocery stores in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on Dec. 4 as part of the third annual Firefighters for Families campaign.
Each holiday season, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows firefighters spend a day volunteering their time to collect donations of cash, food and toys to support the Friends in Need Food Bank and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society.
This year's Firefighters for Families will run Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Safeway, both Save-On-Foods locations, IGA and the new Real Canadian Superstore.
All cash collected is split equally between the two recipient groups. Food donations go to Friends, and toys go to the Hamper Society.
"In a survey conducted this spring, families with children requested that milk be added to the family hamper," said Fran Haughian, executive director for Friends. "This is how the Milk for Kids program was conceived.
"With the help of the Firefighters for Families event, all funds raised that day will go towards putting milk in the monthly hampers for families."
