HINTON, AB — Mikayla Fox had the best of both worlds -- her role as fire chief for a day meant she had unfettered access to really cool fire trucks, but without tedious administrative responsibility. “Yeah. We don’t really do the full fire chief for a day because it would probably bore the kids to tears,” said deputy fire chief, Colin Hanington. “I don’t know if they would really want to do paperwork or follow me around to do fire inspections.” Fox, 8, and 11-year-old sister, Fallon, did take the ceremonial tour of the fire station and inspected the various firefighting equipment and trucks. “I’m the chief,” Mikayla proclaimed, adding that climbing on top of the trucks was her favourite part. The fire chief for a day draw is run through the schools and McDonald’s restaurants in conjunction with Fire Safety Prevention Week each October. It’s a program that has run in Hinton for several years. Hanington picked Mikayla’s name out of a hat on Oct. 18. Mikayla was happy to report no fire calls during her watch.
