The City of Ottawa is considering a new bylaw to cut down on the number of false fire alarms, after spending as much as $8 million last year dealing with such calls. Firefighters responded to 7,671 false alarms in 2002 -- 21.4 per cent of the 35,856 the fire department received. By comparison, just 3,275 calls were listed as actual fires. Unlike many other cities in Ontario, Ottawa has no bylaw setting out fines for repeat offenders.
