PORT COQUITLAM, BC - Emergency calls to Port Coquitlam Fire/Rescue will continue to be dispatched by the city of Surrey. PoCo's contract with Surrey Fire Department, which was renewed last week by the city's finance and intergovernmental committee (FIG), will cost taxpayers $620,264 over five years. Fire Chief Steve Gamble said PoCo has received "excellent service" from Surrey dispatch since 1995. "Our [computer-aided dispatch] system has played a major role in risk management by having all records and incidents maintained," Gamble wrote in a report to FIG Nov. 17. "This has increased the level of service we offer our community at a reasonable cost." FIG members rejected a proposal to transfer dispatch services to E-Comm, the Lower Mainland's communications centre.
