Hi all;

OK, I know smoking is bad - My mother's an R.N. and I get the speech all the time - going on twenty years now.

So I'm wondering - How many of us are smokers ? How many of you guys are ex-smokers and actually quit ?

I've done the patch, the gum, Zyban - sigh. I've gone through cancer (non-smoking related - I asked) and radiation and I still can't seem to kick it.

I *do* at least, not smoke from the time the pager goes off until our first break on scene, when things have calmed down, but I guess I'm looking for some advice from fellow FF's on how you've managed to kick it.

I was a smoker! Yup, near two packs of the regulars a day. I quit last January and my body thanks me (Uh... I think) I've kept a few (Okay a bunch) of pounds on since then. Actually I argue with the missus if I'm actually any healthier (I kidd)....

It's nice not having to worry about when my next opportunity for a "Butt" would be, itching at work to head out for a smoke, not being able to wake up in the morning and going 15 minutes without it.

I don't miss it! But I have noticed the group of friends or people you associate with change as your choices are made

What a Trooper, you must have had Strainers as teeth.... personally introducing myself to women while picking out remnants of my morning smoke just didn't cut it.

Congrats on the big Quit

I spent twenty years behind the iron lung and managed to quit 8 years ago. I still miss the colt cigars at the camp fire and that long lingering butt while sipping my favorite posion.
But I don't dare try even having one as I know I would find an excuse to "only smoke when".
If your serious about quitting you have to do it for yourself and no one else. Also if you falter don't give up,s ooner or later you will either quit and or die trying........

If you haven't quit, you might want to think about it. Just food for thought....

I'm a smoker....I quit quitting years ago now. I figured that nobody likes a "quitter" anyhow. :p

My worst was 3 packs a day (they were free...don't ask) and now a pack usually does me a day or two....all depends on where I'm at. The ship I work on has 7 men, and 5 of us smoke. When I first joined the FD 17 years ago, almost everyone smoked....now there's only 4 or 5 of us out of over 50 members that do.

I can honestly say that I’ve tried smoking in high school and thankfully never got the hook to it. My dad on the others hand is almost 50 and has been smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day since high school and not a thing is wrong with him. He still runs everyday and always passes his medicals with flying colors.

Alcohol abuse in the family is another issue, seems to be genetic thing carried over from Ireland. All the male members in the family have the bright red nose.

I'm kinda like the Ham. I quit quitting some yrs back after a "research" paper came out stating white bread and dill pickles cause cancer or increase its chances of occuring.

Tell that to the guy that runs Maple Leaf foods.

Thanks for the ham, but I'd rather smoke. Least I know what I'm putting in my body.
