SHIPPAGAN, NB - Health Minister Elvy Robichaud announced beefed-up ambulance services for the Acadian Peninsula in Shippagan Monday but residents in nearby Caraquet say that's not enough. They want to hang on to their hospital's 24-hour emergency service. Under the changes announced by the health minister Monday, all ambulance attendants on the Acadian Peninsula are to become qualified paramedics, who will be allowed to start treating patients as soon as they arrive on the scene. With that training, which almost all of them have now completed, they'll be able to use defibrillators and give nitroglycerin pills to heart attack victims, intubate patients, run intravenous lines and administer ventolin for those with asthma attacks or give epinephrine for those suffering severe allergic reactions.
