I am wondering if anyone can give me any information about the Halifax Fire Department (HRM). Anything at all, hiring practices, persion information, what it's like to work there, what kind of people do they look for what kind of interview do they do. Anything not already posted on their web page would be much appreciated.

I am on their waiting list as we speak. It is a great city very professional organization and is the oldest fire service in canada.
I am from another city in canada and am very proud and excited to be on their list and would raither be on their list then any other in canada including my own city which has it's own full-time paid fire department. their is just something about HRFES and halifax. I finished fire school in 02 with the intention of going to halifax when they hired and I was very very lucky too get in the first time.
the steps you go throuht.
1) application
2) qual interview
3) C-PAT and job related tasks
4) polygraph
5) psychological exam
6) board interviw
7) last when they take you on from the list you have to do a medical exam before you are officially hired. you also have to provide a driver's record and crim record. don't let all that scared you it is a long process but well worth it. trust me. they have 40 recuits on there waiting list right now with plans too take some if not all off in april and oct of the new year they have alot of guys retiring a very large amount in the next 3 years so I'am told.
63 fire stations core and rural. paid and vol. hope that helps a little. any questions you have I'll tri my best to help.

Doctor,
My personal suggestion: visit a firehall. The crew will more than likely be happy to help answer any questions you have about the department.

I had a call today from Halifax about one of our members that had applied to HRM. I spent over half an hour on the phone with them bragging her up and down....hopefully she gets it.
She had came to me about 6 months ago asking about what she had to do to get ready to become a career FF. I talked her into joining our department to help prepare her. It looks like her hard work is paying off. :)
