COBOURG, ON - The Town has finally decided to spend the pennies it has been putting away for a rainy day in its fire truck reserve account so it can purchase a new $850,000 aerial truck. Cobourg's executive committee has approved a recommendation to purchase the new truck to replace its 16-year-old truck which has obsolete, deteriorating parts. The Town will pay for the new truck through a combination of: the $325,000 in the current fire apparatus reserve account, the $270,000 in planned allocations to the reserve account in 2005 and 2006, $200,000 in dividends from the Town-owned utility and the estimated sale price of $55,000 for the current truck. "It is a big purchase and we did not take it lightly while we researched it," explains Al Mann, Cobourg's fire chief. Three proposals were submitted for the new fire truck and a proposal from Safetek Emergency Vehicles was chosen because it met all industry standards and the fire service's specifications. Chief Mann describes Safetek as one of the top-selling manufacturers of fire fighting equipment. Councillor Lloyd Williams, protection services co-ordinator, says the truck comes with a 20-year warranty.
