I just returened back this evening from Phoenix, where the International Association of Fire Fighters Association (IAFF) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) kicked off their Labour Management Initiative Conference (LMI).

The focus of the conference was to bring Labour and Management , Union and Chiefs, together to address and work on initiatives that we can both agree to work on together.

While there were approximately 300 in attendance, we can do better!

The event followed the IAFFs Affiliate Leadership Training Session, where there were over 900 Union (Association) representatives for the IAFFs overly successful labour educational training conference.

I was in attendance as I am an IAFF instructor and was present to facilitate 6 of the over 30 or so educational sessions provided for IAFF members.

This is the 8th year for the ALTS Confernce and it keeps achieving record numbers, year after year.

The Joint IAFF/IAFC LMI Confernce continiues on through tomorrow and will hopefully build on the benefits of both Union and Chiefs working together to better the fire service.

We must continue to set aside our differences on the issues that we can't agree on and work together on the matters that we can, to advance the fire service, not only in Ontario, or Canada, but North America.

I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on building relationships between union and management, as well volunteers (PT's) and full time.

I can say as a union leader that sometimes entrenched attitudes (on both sides) can be a problem with working on items of common interest. It is hard sometimes to take at face value the professed motives of individuals who have actively worked against the best interests of your members so often in the past.
