Kamsack will hire you in a heart beat. It would be a 6 on 3 off schedule, 8 hours at base and then on call. The place is a dive though, and the owner is a lunatic, hence the reason they are always looking. I picked up a few casual shifts there in the past just for some extra coin, bud couldn't imagine working full time there. You'll make a minimum of 50 k your first year and the housing is dirt cheap. I know a guy who just bought a 4 bedroom place for $40000 recently. Full time PCP work in SK is occasionally available if you don't mind working in a dive. I hear Watson is looking for a full time guy right now, but again a lunatic for a boss; it's a prerequisite to own a service in this province lol.

I forgot to mention it, but i had a friend who worked casual for them, just so he could pick and choose his shifts, and he always worked more then anyone else making $5000 some months. You may want to go that way with Kamsack just until you feel them out. They would gladly work out a 5 5 schedule for you this way and 90% of the time it will work. They even let you stay at base if you're technically considered casual.

you do not paint a pretty picture of either service!
What is the up side of working there? Call volume? Interesting Calls?
Cheap housing?

Let me in on the secret?
Do they pay Health Sciences wages?

Ya sorry, i hate to sound so cynical, but the town of Kamsack is pretty grim. The staff were a little weird too, but form what i hear they have hired a few really fun younger guys who like to go snowboarding and do other fun stuff on days off with you.

Kamsack does have a decent call volume for a rural service; if i was to guess, i would say they are in the top 5 for being busy, as far as rural goes. It's rural EMS, so you're going to do 70% transfer calls to Regina or Yorkton, but thats the norm with rural anywhere. As far as emerg calls go, they are more or less par with anywhere else as far as variety goes.

I meant the town is a dive, not the base. It's actually quite a nice large base with decent bedrooms, a bowflex and a treadmill to use.

Everyone is on at 9 am, but the day crew physically go in to base until 4pm, at which time they are up for calls that come in while the night crew is already on a call, so you can most likely get a workout in, enjoy an uninterrupted supper etc, unless things get really busy, but not all that common. Night crew is on call as 2nd up until 4pm and then phsically at base until 12 am i think, then on call throughout the night, but remain first up during the night; the night is generally a little slower, which is how they make sense of this; night shift is also where you will get the odd overtime hour if you're called back in after midnight.

They are not union, but sooo should be lol, so they are like the rest of the non union services in the province and pay level one health science wages; i believe the current level one PCP wage is $21.67 and then your on call pay of $2.19.

Housing is very cheap, but unless you're looking to set up camp for a few years, you may want to hold off on buying; resale is not good and forget about a quick sale.

The owner, like so many private non union places is the problem. I'm all for being a keener at work and being optimistic, but some of the things i have seen in these types of work environments floor me. Things like being made to wash the secretaries vehicle just because you are done your duties and waiting for a call, or cleaning up the owners rental properties after a tenant moves out, just because it's during your shift; i know this sounds lazy, but bear in mind, your wage is paid by the district, not these owners, so this is borderline fraud. This stuff doesn't happen everyday, but just often enough to annoy a guy, and it's in 90% of the private services from what i hear. SK is a small province and you will get to know people from all over, over time and swap many stories, some good and some bad.

Check it out as a casual and go from there. I just want to be honest with you and give you the complete picture.

As far as Watson goes, my lunatic comment was purely based on what 2 of their previous employees told me. I do here the money is good and you stay at home for your whole shift, get 8 hours of pay, followed by your on call pay, all without ever going in, so thats kind of nice. You just go to work when you have a call. Not very busy though and a totally BLS service.

Swift current is supposed to be great but you might not get enough hours as a casual to get by. Wakaw is hands down the best place i have worked; it will actually blow your mind after working elsewhere, but they are rarely looking. Prince Albert will hire you on a technically part time basis, but with schedule structure and plenty of hours; it's something like 5 on call at home 14 hour shifts followed by 3 actual 12 hour shifts at base, then 4 off; you work a lot, but you have that structure and should clear after taxes $3000 plus a month, which will be fine in PA.

Another one you may want to check out is Lloyd, as they are always looking. The guy likes you to have your Alberta license though; right now Alberta is giving out 1 year temp licenses for eligible applicants like yourself, which would cover this; the idea is that you pass the written and scenario's at some point during that year, but this at least keeps you legel in the meantime.

If you have anymore questions, i'll do my best with them. i hope this was a bit more possitive then my last post.
