Who here has wage parity with your city police? If not how far off are you.?

On Toronto we always try to have parity with the Toronto Police. This has included the recent retention pay clause that we were awarded.
We are currently waiting for the police to settle their contract before we go to the labour relations board.
This was mentioned at our association meeting last night.

We're not on par with Peel Regional Police ... but we're pretty close, maybe a thousand off of 1st class constable. Seems that we go for the same increase as they get, but for a short time we were the highest paid department in Ontario, ($67,300) ... that is until some other contracts were settled. Speaking of which, our contract runs out at the end of 2004, and they just started negotiating the new one.

We are roughly the same as Vancouver Police. We lost ground a few contract's back, but have been getting the same pay increase's the last few time's. I think the difference between first class FF and Constable is somewhere in the same range as colin stated above.....BC....

We are on the same pay as the police, who just settled their contract, although they got the 3/6/9 retention bonus, I think we are going to have a fight on our hands to get the same.

Why do you feel there will be a fight fireknight? Our cops just got the 3/6/9 " experience" pay as well, but they gave up alot to get it in my opinion. ie. Now they must take their Lieu days in time only , no more pay out.
You guys shouldn't be afraid of a fight you have your own "lawyer" right on staff (B. Quinn). :)

Question for you guys. When contract time roll's around is it your union executive that negotiates your contract or do you hire pro's to deal with city hall??

Hey LF, the city is already screaming about not being able to pay the cops settlement, we have more members and more members in the higher "bonus" catagory, also "experience bonus" is a better statement than "retention bonus" because we have no problem getting members.... hey I know we deserve it, but the city has more important things to pay for such as concert halls, parades, planting trees, consultants for wind and air...so on...and so on....
And yes I would not wish a p*ssed off Barry Q on anyone...;)
And I do not want to lose my lieu day pay out.
BC, our executive does the talking.

In Toronto the cops get "retention pay", firefighters get "recognition pay".

We make considerably more then the local police, but its kind of complicated why. The simple explanation is that we were all once provincial employees in fact the police and Fire Depts were once under one organization. The Fire Dept was downloaded to the city about 15 years ago. The RNC stayed with provincial government and has suffered under various wage freezes, and even a wage roll back. However our wages under the city have steadily increased
